Using 6-8 stats to measure performance

It is inconsistent at best. Nevertheless, myopic.
Just don’t post this calling it ‘the official top performers’ and USAWP endorsing this:

It is akin to a swim meet where they only take time to lanes 1-4.

yes. The +/- and stat lines were wrong all weekend with the poor stat keeping on the sidelines.

UCLA scored 16 goals against LB with only 7 assists. Maybe. 0 goals scored on 6-5? Wow, Adam won’t be happy with that if accurate.

Edit, even better. In the USA youth/sunset game, 26 goals scored, 1 assist. That’s like 22 points of +/- ignored.

More like only some of the lap splits from some of the lanes.

The more games I look at, the more annoyed I am by this. Several stats that go into their calculations are just zeros. Some whole games appear to be missing.

Here is a really dumb question. What has to happen exactly, for a pass in waterpolo be considered an assist.

a goal must be scored.

Seriously, probably subjective by stat taker and team expectations.

That is spot on right there. I have been told that an assist will only be counted if it is an immediate shot, meaning a catching shoot or a very quick shot out a set.

This leads to a lot of unassisted goals by goalies who make a really nice counterattack pass, but because the shot isn’t immediate and takes place about two seconds after the pass was made, they do not get credited with an assist from a majority of coaches I’ve talked to.

If anyone needs an example what’s excellence looks like in stat reporting and collecting:

This part bums me out because so many are clearly incomplete and/or clearly wrong and then usa water polo still decides to post it on Instagram. Such a missed opportunity, and like I have said in many posts, i love 68 for investing in the platform to add stats but it has to be better and especially if usa water polo is going to post them on instagram. That said, any idea how it can be fixed? is it feasible that maybe each team could provide a spotter who needs to participate in the stat keeping? this would apply to USA water polo sponsored tournaments

Truly great stats and something to aspire to, would be curious how many people were used. Could be done with video review and less people but the video needs to be high quality and show the game/shot clock.

But on a 6-5 they don’t count assists correct?

I’ve never used it so I don’t know. Because assists are so subjective I would assume that they don’t count that towards anything. It’s honestly probably the easiest way, which is unfortunate because this place such a huge role in the game and showing that players can see the entire pool and are making correct passes.

But again that is all subjective and something a coach can see when reviewing film.

I actually did not mean, how does 6-8 use it. I was wondering what is the official description of what counts as an assists in waterpolo, other than the fact that the end result must be a goal of course :slightly_smiling_face:

Does it basically have to be a ‘catch and shoot’ which results in a goal, and does it apply when goal is on a 6on5 also, in the rule books?

It can’t be the same as basketball. Wet passes should still be assists. No assists on 6-5? That can’t be.

100% agree!

For one of the games, we had a goalie playing the Q1 and Q2 and the person recording the 6-8 desk attributed all of his stats to the other goalie on the team that played in Q3 and Q4 (as if the goalie playing in the first half never even played). The person running the 6-8 desk felt very overwhelmed and it was apparently their first time doing the stats.

In the end, I appreciate the effort made and I know people are trying their best but it is not right nor accurate to be posting stat leaders when the information collected is incorrect and incomplete. Seems a little bit like false advertisement.

6-8 is doing academic grades now?

sigh.

I just had an opportunity to review one quarter of a National League 18u game and compare it with 6-8 stats for that quarter.

When I say that the 6-8 stats are as good as the people entering the stats, here’s what I mean.

For one quarter–8 minutes–first game of the day on Sunday, 6-8 has 54 events recorded: sprint, goals, assists, penalties earned and penalties assessed, steals and turnovers, offensive fouls (a turnover without a corresponding steal), exclusions suffered and earned, missed shots, goalie saves).

Of those 54 events, 6-8 record entries are incorrect 15 times.

Of the 15 incorrect entries, four errors could have been caught by reviewing the secretary’s match log: one was a goal misallocated, 1 was an exclusion misallocated, and 2 were exclusions that did not occur. The remaining 11 incorrect entries relate to:

2 misallocations of credit for an assist (two assists from goalie for counter goals were attributed to field players

3 errors on one transaction (goalie did not touch ball on shot off post (that’s one error for awarding a save), which meant no 2m throw, which means that when defense collected ball at 2m throw area, that’s neither a steal nor a turnover (that’s two more errors).

1 was a penalty earned that was misallocated,

2 were exclusions earned that were misallocated (to center, when the exclusion was on perimeter)

2 were assists credited to an uninvolved player (example, goalscorer stole and scored counter on a solo effort and a goal scored off of foul-and-shot).

and 1 was a clear backcourt turnover not recorded (which is a 15th error and a missing entry since the total should have been 55 events, not 54).

This is over one quarter. Eight minutes.

This leads to completely garbled +/- outputs for all of the players impacted: the player(s) who was (were) charged with 2 exclusions in the quarter when (t)he(y) suffered one, the player who was credited with exclusions earned when he was not involved, the player who was credited with an assist for another player’s steal-and-score, etc.

I want 6-8 to work. But it does not work quite yet.

[EDIT:

I realized I missed two addition events at the end of that quarter: a missed shot and a goalie save (neither of which made it into the 6-8 stats log).

This brings the total events to 57, and the total errors 17 for an error rate of just under 30%.]
