Better stats for parents and coaches

I was reading on the stats system, 6-8 is not a good system, maybe an open source system for parents or coaches to used.

@wp2024

I think you nail!
“It would be useful if they could add a feature to “download my team stats/tournament data to Excel.”

If I were them, I wouldn’t partner with 6-8 just to gain access to their data. I’d develop an open-source stats platform that could use a crowdsourcing model similar to Waze. Parents, assistant coaches, and others could upload their team’s stats or collect stats during games, with multiple individuals contributing and the platform averaging the data.

The 6-8 platform could probably be replicated in an afternoon with Claude while adding more useful features, such as a user-defined weighting system for +/-. @cmbreeze showed me the system his team uses, and it made much more sense to me than the 6-8 metrics.

And hey Splashbracket, if you see this post and you are interested in ‘equity investors’ just DM.”

I have a partner that I am working with on just this.

Have you seen ballside.web.app? It’s got great features (schedule, what ifs, odds, pool location, etc) and worked seamlessly for us throughout session 1 and 2. I met the 2 girls (current youth water polo players) who created this back at Futures when they had already launched and they really impressed me with their story.

68’s “scores” part is not super interesting. it’s there just to ensure people do not go elsewhere to see scores AND because 68’s stuff is supposed to be watching games anyway so entering scores is byproduct of that.

Now, 68’s “dashboard” is a whole other beast… It’s a way for parents and players to game-ify and juice up their per-player stats.

When your “Games Goals,Assists,Steals,Blocks,Earned Exclusions,Exclusion,Turnover” stats are now public record, you optimize for that. (Who cares if your team wins  when your “production score” is 100% )

And, for a limited time only, if you enroll your kid into these tests, the score is even prettier!

Peel off the “tests” scoring and under it the 3rd party observing player’s core metrics is super addicting to participate in.

For fun, compare “Claire Billish” (~2 years younger sister), to “Abigail Billish” (~2 years older sister), both on 16u national team. (Abby will likely be team MVP of the World 16u). Claire on paper is a beast compared to Abby. Reality is the opposite. But, just having these “Games Goals,Assists,Steals,Blocks,Earned Exclusions,Exclusion,Turnover” as public record, is like a credit score for the kid. It’s a signal that kid cleared the base of (a) played in A-level teams (to which 68 staff cared to attend) and (b) did something useful in the water.

No matter how questionable the comparative value of these Dashboard scores are, they are unquestionably THE metric players and parents are using now just to establish the fact that “this kid exists and has some value”. It will take a bit of pool-side-presence for any competitor to compete with that.

Stats chasing can cause a lot of problems on a team and coaches shouldn’t be encouraging published stats metrics. Bragging about inflated stats that were (often times) earned against weaker opponents is simply disingenuous.

Until 6-8 can harness some form of a “strength of opponent” metric the program is highly flawed.

I use the gamedesk regularly, took a break most of club season but started tracking our daughter’s games for JO’s. They’ve done alot of work to streamline the inputting of stats with multiple inputs.

I find the app easy to use, tracking games solo can be intense, but having a person next to you helps to confirm when alot of things happen in a short period.

Creating a stat app should be extremely easy to vibe code, where 68 has killed it is by attaching official 68 athletes to rosters and their stats being uploaded as soon as the game finishes. The long term tracking of athlete stats and performance is valuable to some families, even if just a number, it tracks progress and growth. Alot of people talk about building a stat app/program, are you building it for a team, a parent, an organization, a sanctioning body? I feel like 68 gamedesk is hitting alot of those target markets, and like most tech, updating as it grows to get implemented. As mentioned, I’d like to see strength of opponent factored in if they are being published and given any weight.

There already other stat apps, and to be honest, if game changer could iron out their stats for water polo, they’d kill it. Streaming with overlayed scoreboard, live stats and game breakdowns. It looked like that was the direction 68 was going but the video integration wasn’t quite there yet.
