Futures Super Finals 18U Girls

Thread specific to the 18U girls weekends.

Is the schedule out for the super finals?

Yes. Both Boys and Girls schedules are up on the site.

With the seedings in place, it looks like we’re in for some exciting surprises next weekend! I imagine many teams played their B teams during the regular futures season, and if there aren’t any other tournaments happening, they might bring back their A squads for the superfinals.

Here are my predictions, often wrong, for the girls’ 18u age group. This is one of the strongest and most competitive tournament fields in some time. The clubs that win Groups A, B, C, and D automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. The other clubs have to win at least one extra game to reach the quarterfinals. The clubs seeded 13 through 24 have to win two extra games to reach the quarterfinals. So will the clubs that finish 3rd in Groups A, B, C, and D. I won’t be surprised to see a number of ā€œupsets.ā€.

  1. Santa Barbara A. One of 5 clubs in the tournament with a coach who is in the Hall of Fame (4 as players and one as a coach). Santa Barbara has a great goalie and, if my count is accurate, 11 players who are committed to play D1 water polo in the fall.
  2. Regency. Regency is Mater Dei’s 2026 team. They are very well coached by Chris Segesman and have a talented roster. Their goalie is committed to play for USC.
  3. SOCAL. Because SOCAL isn’t seeded in the top 12, they have to play two extra games to reach the quarterfinals. If I’m reading the schedule correctly, they will face Santa Barbara in the semifinals if both teams make it that far. I give Santa Barbara the slight edge.
  4. Lamorinda. Coached by Hall-of-Fame coach, Guy Baker. Lamorinda has an excellent center. Baker has shown he knows what to do with excellent centers.
  5. Newport Beach. One should never count out a Newport team. If I’m reading the schedule correctly, Newport will face SOCALin the quarterfinals if they both make it that far. That game could go either way.
  6. Legacy. Coached by a Hall-of-Fame player. Legacy could finish 3rd in Group ā€œB,ā€ the toughest group of ā€œ3ā€.
  7. SD Shores. SD Shores could beat Lamorinda in Group ā€œCā€ play.
  8. Clovis. Clovis has a solid team. Eden Coughran (Garces Memorial Class of 2027, Cal) is one of the top 4 or 5 Class-of-2027 players in the country.
  9. Diablo. I think Diablo will face SOCAL in the quarterfinals. Diablo is very good but I don’t think they can beat SOCAL.
  10. Stanford. Stanford has a very good goalie who is committed to play for USC in the fall and a Class-of-2027 LH attacker who has senior national team potential.
  11. Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz will face La Jolla A in a cross-over game if both teams make it that far. La Jolla could win that game.
(12.) 680. I predict that 680 will face Rose Bowl in a cross-over game. That game could go either way.

Newport just took first at JO Quals beating Regency who beat Socal handedly.

I think Santa Barbara B will beat Santa Cruz and face LJU in the cross-0ver.

Definitely group B is the ā€˜group of death’ to use a term from the Soccer World Cup

@Jeff, your trajectory for SOCAL is also what I see. Should win group H on Friday and then on Saturday play Stanford or Long Beach first. Win and most likely play Diablo. Win and most likely play Newport, all on Saturday, to get a shot at Santa Barbara on Sunday in the semis. Tough road ahead

Can we agree the seeding for this tournament was way off? Which ruins the next rounds. Two seeds should not beat one seeds 19-1.

Seeding is only dramatically wrong for 1 of 2 reasons…

  1. the teams didnt have consistent rosters so the team’s performance was not consistent from league play to super finals

And/or

  1. there is an offset in the overall capability of the teams from north vs sputh so that rank in one zone is not similar to rank in the other zone.

The four 18u girls teams who won their top 12 brackets and go straight to the quarterfinals tomorrow are:

1st in A: Santa Barbara

1st in B: Regency

1st in C: Lamorinda

1st in D: Newport

Play-in games start tomorrow morning.
