Thanks for the explanation about the missed shot. I am not sure that I agree that a missed shot should not have some sort of negative value as many have the same result as a turnover, but you guys have obviously thought it through.
The advanced analytics going on in most other sports have not hit water polo. For example how do coaches value goals? A 6 on 6 goal is worth more than a man up goal which is worth more than a 5 meter goal. IMO 6o6=1, 6o5=.8 5meter=.5 AND missing a 5meter should be -.5
You make a very good point which we did discuss. Doing stats for WP is way more art than science. So since we couldn’t really define a hard/fast rule that wouldn’t penalize players for shooting what would could be a good shot, we use the combination of events to tell the story around a shot…for example:
Player puts up a complete piece of shit glory shot from the 6 under coverage with 20 seconds left on the clock that is caught by the goalie:
Player # = missed shot
Goalie = block
Player # = turnover
Player has gone 2 for 15 in the game…we have a conversation about decision making, looking for the assist or to make a play using the other players. When the athletes discuss the game with stats, the +/- is part of the discussion, but that shooting percentage is a huge indicator of in game performance.
So in this case, player gets the ding for the dumb missed shot, goalie gets the credit.
I would not usually penalize the player in a 6/5 situation where the last minute good shot was taken that was blocked by the goalie at the last second of the clock.
Since there was no real consensus on the value of the “miss”, we use “missed” in conjunction with other value stats to adjust.

So 6/8 does capture the type of goal as an option on goals. When you hit “goal”, you get a pop up and can add additional details including canned scenarios like penalty, 6/5, counter etc. There’s also a notes field. The gamedesk gives you a full .xls file output of the game so you can run your own secondary scoring metrics on your own after.
I do this…I have a full Google Sheets dashboard for my son’s high school team so that there’s a game by game and season roll up of stats. It’s fun and incredibly nerdy.
Here’s the game sheet I use. There’s a shot placement section in the lower right hand corner if you are into that sort of thing. The top half is for my team, lower half is for opposing. I don’t really care about the granular detail of opposing goalies so I count saves as blocks for them.
To use the game desk with this paper method which is more suitable for parents or team managers:
- simply tally up the hash marks in each box
- Create a new game in the game desk (make it official if you want to give the kids their stats in the 6-8 mobile app
- Select your rosters
- Just select your player and enter the corresponding number of clicks on each event (4 goals for #3 = select #3, hit goal 4 times)
- You don’t HAVE to enter stats for the opposing team.
Once you are done. just end the game and send yourself the excel file.

Thank you, will print and use it for their next games and start adding them to the 68 profile and stats. How do we share the link with the coaches for their stats? Or how do we extract the data to present? is it like hudle where you share it with recruits/ coaches?
At the end of the game you can email the results to yourself or yourself and others. It exports a spreadsheet which you can interpret or send on to the coaches.
My son prefers to look at the game desk app box score display. The spreadsheet is not iPhone friendly
Not related to calcuations, but does anyone know when the 68 sports update the National League stats for all teams/players?
seems like a few days or more after the weekend competitions
National league was two weekends ago, strange don’t see stats yet for players.
Often times, an offensive is called somewhere away from the ball and it’s not clear who the offensive was called on because not all refs are great about pointing that out. How do you account for that?
This is where a spotter comes in handy as well as knowing the game. You will start to watch the game differently as you take more stats. There are points in transition where the ball is not where the action is going to happen. If it’s really not clear, I don’t attribute that call to a player. In my mind, I’d rather miss a call than attribute a negative value event to the wrong player. Sometimes, if I’m at the desk, I will keep notes and ask the ref if there’s a break in the action.
There’s no way in this game to get every stat and whistle.
There’s also times where you may want to attribute an event to multiple players (steals). You can do that as well.
National League stats still not updated for individual scoring. When you go to a team and select a player stats looks like they are from week 1 and 2. Kind of weird when they have top individual stats on other side.
@BayPolo feature or bug? Update DB?
No idea how they are doing stats for these games. Most likely someone is watching game film and entering stats. During ODP, those stats were entered by people in Utah watching the GOLS feed. I don’t think it’s a bug just delay in entering them. Getting people to do stats for games is tough sometimes.
