For boys, I see 1967 water polo club on schedule. Which high school is that?

Miramonte. The 2026 season will be Miramonte’s 60th year of boys’ high school water polo. Their first year was 1967. The same year as Campolindo and Acalanes.

Same year that Foothill HS Aquatics was born. Foothill HS (Santa Ana) did not have a pool yet that year, so they trained offsite, under the leadership of Tom DeLong

SD Dons on the boys side. Shouldn’t be close, even if not fully staffed.

Based on all the close 16U games in super finals, i would expect to see a lot of close games. too bad Mission is not playing in this tournament

Never one to pass up the opportunity to be dead wrong in public, my predictions for this year’s Newport Summer Invite follow below. Making predictions in summer high school tournaments is difficult because, among other things, some coaches will have shorter rotations than others and some coaches will be more reticent about putting after-goal and end-of-quarter plays on tape than others.

On the boys’ side of the tournament, six of the eight schools have a good chance to finish the 2026 high school season as one of the top 10 schools in the country. JSerra, Bishop’s, La Jolla, and Santa Margarita are not playing in this tournament but they also have a good chance to finish in the top 10. Campolindo, De La Salle, Redwood, and Menlo are not playing but they are likely to finish the season in the top 6 in Northern California.

On the girls’ side, Sacred Heart is the only Northern California School playing in the tournament. Sacred Heart is now coached by Gaby Hernandez. Sacred Heart, Carondelet, Campolindo, and Miramonte may finish the high school season as the top 4 schools in Northern California. Unfortunately, we’ll never know how they would fare against the top Southern California schools in CIF play.

Here are my predictions:

Boys

  1. Cathedral Catholic. SDKraken thinks Cathedral will win easily even without Jett Taylor. I think Cathedral will win but I won’t be surprised if they lose a game.
  2. Miramonte. Miramonte is fast, has two Class-of-2027 “Big 4” recruits, and probably has the strongest “second team” in the country. That depth should help in a tournament requiring each school to play five games in three days.
  3. LA Premier. LA Premier is a very well-coached team. Center defender/center Harry Siafaris (Class of 2027, USC, Cadet National Team) is one of the best players in the country.
  4. Newport Harbor. Ross Sinclair has just returned to Newport Harbor after spending several weeks coaching the U.S. team in the Youth World Championships. Newport graduated an exceptional senior class and will have a younger, less experienced team this year. Still, it’s never wise to count out a Newport team.

Girls

  1. Newport Harbor. Newport is loaded with talented players. I don’t know whether Sinclair will coach Newport’s boys’ or girls’ team in this tournament.
  2. Mater Dei. Mater Dei has an excellent center and coach.
  3. Oaks Christian. I don’t know whether Jack Kocur will coach the boys’ or girls’ team.
  4. Orange Lutheran

Couple upsets today in the Newport invite with Long Beach Wilson beating Miramonte in a shootout. They seem to have a senior heavy team with a couple inexperienced young kids. Oaks also beat Newport in a shootout.
