2025 Boys/Girls Newport Summer Invite

Here is a link to the schedule for the 2025 Boys’ and Girls’ Newport Summer Invite:

Why no Jserra for the boys and OLu for the girls?

Mission boys will play at Quicksilver next weekend.

Thoughts / Predictions? Should be a good competitive tournament.

Here are my predictions, often wrong, for this weekend’s Boys’ Newport Summer Invite. Looking ahead to the 2025 high school season, JSerra is the only school not playing in this tournament that I have ranked in the top 7.

  1. Newport Harbor. Connor Ohl will miss the tournament because he’s playing with the senior national team in the World Championships. Even without Ohl, Newport is loaded.
  2. Cathedral Catholic. Cathedral still has a relatively young team. I don’t know if they will be missing anyone.
  3. Miramonte. Miramonte will be at full strength. Miramonte has one thing Northern California high schools rarely have–depth. Miramonte’s second group of 7 would be a top 5 NorCal high school team. Drew Holland, recently retired from the senior national team, has returned to Miramonte as the co-head coach.
  4. Sacred Heart Prep. Goalie Murdoch Baker-Matsuoka will play for the first time since May and is likely to be rusty. After Newport, SHP’s top 3 seniors (Baker-Matsuoka, center Oliver Marcin, and LH attacker Clay Carrington) are stronger than the top 3 seniors playing for any other school.
  5. Oaks Christian. Jack Kocur will be with the senior national team in Singapore this weekend. I don’t know who will coach Oaks at this tournament. Oaks could be a top 3 or 4 team in the fall.
  6. Corona del Mar. I don’t know if CdM will be missing anyone. They could finish in the top 4 in this tournament.
  7. Harvard-Westlake. HW will have a young team this year but they will be very good in 2026.
  8. Loyola. I don’t know if Loyola will be missing anyone.

Can someone shed some light on the Newport Invite? Is this a high school or club event? This is the boy’s bracket.

|A1 - Newport. B1- DM Padres
|A2 - Oaks Christian. B2 - CDM
|A3 - Orinda. B3 - Atherton
|A4 - Loyola. B4 - LA Premier

Oaks is a school. LA Premier is a club. Atherton is a club. Newport, Loyola and CDM can go both ways. Orinda? DM Padres?

In any event, good lineup of teams. I’m picking Newport from “A” and a u-pick’em between DM, CDM and Atherton from the “B”.

Similar concept as HS State champs — club event through USAWP where the teams are asked to bring next years HS roster. These teams used to all play in HS State champs until they decided to break off and do their own thing.

Names of teams are just done like this to avoid club/HS conflict (might even be dead period for some HS teams). Orinda is Miramonte and DM is Cathedral Catholic.

Thanks for the info!

They are also using NFHS rules instead of USAWP, so some slight differences there from what we’ll see at JOs.

No 2M goal box? Anything else meaningful?

Goal zone still exists.

Major differences are overtime 2x3:00 period, sudden death if still tied after that instead of a shoot out.

3x2:00 1x0:30 time outs instead of 2x1:00

Minor difference at the way set play is called when receiving a pass while face to face with a defender

No ‘wasting time’ rule.

On penalty shots defenders do not have to line up at the 6

Generally quicker exclusion calls, NFHS/NCAA are more inclined towards protecting players over allowing advantage to play out like USAWP/Fina

That’s just off the top of my head. Probably missed something.

Edit: minor act of misconduct exists in NFHS

Flagrant misconduct does not have a 4:00 6 on 5

What’s the difference in center while facing guard? Something about locked up with two hands vs one?

I’ve also noticed contras while up on a counter and cutting off called in NCAA, but almost never in USAWP/FINA where it’s an exclusion or a non call. Not sure about NFHS. Takes a goal away from countering team and gifts it to team that was down a counter, literally most impactful call in the game.

Basically, when a pass is made to set in USAWP, the set player has until the ball lands in the water to release the defender if they’re locked up, otherwise contra.

In NFHS it’s instead when the ball leaves the passer’s hand.

I have no idea why, that’s just how it’s been explained to me.

Yeah USAWP/FINA definitely calls more in favor of the offense. They’re trying to make a marketable product and want more offense, whereas NCAA/NFHS care more about keeping players unhurt. So a countering player cutting off the defense and kicking off is much more likely to be allowed when schools don’t want that level of physicality.

Caught the tail end of the Newport game yesterday—hard to recognize the team yet again! Anyone know how many incoming freshmen and more transfers they picked up this year?

It’s a public school with open enrollment and a strong track record of developing talent from within the community. Their incoming senior class is already one of the best and deepest around, so adding more to that squad doesn’t really make much sense—especially when it means transferring just to sit behind such a talented roster. Still, some are drawn by the chance to compete at a higher level, even if playing time isn’t guaranteed.

Didn’t watch the games, but as an old guy, it’s great to see CDM competing again. Picking Newport in the finals and Miramonte In the 3rd place game on the boy’s side.

Orinda/Lamo/Miramonte does not often beat Atherton/SHP. Congrats to them. Bet it was a heck of a game.

Final Results:

Boys
Championship game: Newport 9, CdM 7. A very good showing by CdM in this tournament.
3rd place game: Miramonte 14, SHP 13. A preview of the 2025 CIF Northern California Regional Division 1 championship game?
5th place game: Cathedral 13, Oaks 12
7th place game: Loyola 11, HW 9

Girls
Championship game: Newport 13, Oaks Christian 9
3rd place game: Mater Dei 13, Bishop’s 8
5th place game: SHP 6, Seaside 4. If the rosters shown on the tournament website are accurate, it looks like “Seaside” is the Seaside Club team and includes Class of 2025 players.
7th place game: CdM 10, Foothill 9

(SD Shores, not Bishops. Some overlap but eg Valhalla HS contributes key players to the SD Shores squad)
