CC up 7-6 on DLS at half. Don’t anticipate the game being close in the second half. Sloan Brown is hurt and Hayden Tully is done for the game after a game exclusion.
Not sure about high school but they are really cracking down on that in college this year. Celebrate aggressively at your own risk
Yeah same official from the Campo game makes that call on the kid from DLS — came over and you could hear him on camera. Had to change the call cause he didn’t know the HS rules. WOW.
14-11 final CC over DLS. Would’ve liked to see how the game went if Tully was still in. Won’t comment on the officiating because I honestly didn’t get a clear view. Brown came back in the game and did well. DLS had a lot of the main CC players in foul trouble, so they were able to stay in the game during the second half. I think McPhail, Axlin, and Jett Taylor all had two exclusions. Sophomore Diego Dantas played very well for CC. I think it was both a byproduct of a lot of attention on his teammates, but also credit to him.
Semis are Newport v Miramonte (who had a nice win over Oaks) and CC vs the winner of SHP/JSerra. JSerra is currently up 9-8 in the third quarter.
SHP over JSerra 12-9. JSerra didn’t score in the fourth quarter. A 9-6 JSerra lead turned into a 6-0 SHP run the rest of the game. Great game from Clay Carrington — I counted at least five goals. Also amazing game from Murdoch Baker-Matsuoka, great prediction from @jeff.
Mater Dei vs SHP was one of the most lob sided officiating games I’ve ever seen. It was rather convenient that MD was called for 16 exclusions that game compared to 2 for the host team SHP.
Not to mention 5 of the 16 were penalty shots that were goals. And MD still only lost by 6, with 3 starters majored. It was painfully obvious that something was up. It’s like they were referees for the KC Chiefs
I understand your frustration here, and I’ll preface by saying that I was not at the game and did not watch the game; I only saw the final score.
However, to play devil’s advocate here: Everyone knows that the Brian Kreutzkamp style is to run zone and make teams beat you from the outside. They don’t have the depth and typically run small rotations, so they can’t afford foul trouble. It makes sense that a team that’s sitting back all game and funneling shots to their goalie isn’t going to get many kickouts called on them. Lopsided exclusion ratios are likely to occur when it’s like this, and we also see this at the college level, where teams run a heavy zone or play Brescia or M defense. The exclusion ratio for SHP/JSerra was 2/8.
And have two dominant centers in their starting lineup.
I understand that, but the exclusion ratio is still outrageous. Sure they were running zones, but MD was still able to get a few balls into center that surprisingly didn’t result in any exclusions. SHP played a great game and MD didn’t play perfectly, but the officials had (in my opinion) far too much influence on the outcome.
The lack of exclusions called on Sacred Heart is a real thing. Has been for years. When you host the tournament…..so it appears to go in sacred heart favor year after year.
Wow, didn’t see that coming in the Santa Margarita - Oaks Christian match. 14 - 6!
Saturday’s 5-8 games:
Santa Margarita 14, Oaks Christian 6
DLS 15, JSerra 10
Semifinals:
Newport 6, Miramonte 5
Cathedral 10, SHP 9
7th place game:
JSerra 11, Oaks Christian 10
5th place game:
Santa Margarita 14, DLS 11
Championship game:
Newport 15, Cathedral Catholic 10
3rd place game:
SHP 10. Miramonte 9
Cathedral Catholic has to leave the tournament early to catch their flight home. Therefore, they will play their 2nd game of the day at 3:00 p.m. regardless of whether it’s the championship game or the 3rd place game.
Did the schedule change or something? Seems odd if not.
Another good win for DLS, they’ve exceeded many people’s expectations so far this weekend. Jserra just couldn’t the center play of DLS. Newport Miramonte was a pretty sloppy and wild game. Newport drew a ton of exclusions (over a dozen) but couldn’t convert. Newport backup goalie Liam Kim had a solid game.
CC over SHP 10-9. Max Arnold scores a game winner on a 7x6 to put Cathedral in the championship game against Newport.
To accommodate Cathedral Catholic’s travel schedule, the championship game will be played before the 3rd place game.
Once again, we have the Newport versus CC showdown. Should be a great game, I’ll take CC in this one
Of the three games by SHP exclusions have been:
MD 15 - SHP 2
JSerra 8 - SHP 2
CC 10 - SHP 2
There could certainly be something other than refing bias at work here. Correlation does not prove causation. Perhaps SHP has a coached/trained style of play that advantages them against all opponents in regards to exclusions? At the Southcoast Tourney this year, of the games I saw, SHP generally came out on top in exclusion ratio v. opponents.
BTW am a rival school dad of SHP.
Interesting. Do you have similar stat from elite 8?
