Prediction with the caveat that everyone plays their top 16u eligible players in the 16u Division as expected…

Dark Horses from the Bottom 12 that could Crack the top 4 with a crazy run (would have to go 5-0 over day 1&2):

should be some great games on day 1 if everyone is playing their 16s down in 16U. finishing 3rd in top groups or first in bottom groups means having 3 potentially tough games on Saturday to crack the top 4. I like Dons chances to emerge from the bottom

Here are my predictions, often wrong, for the 16u age group. This is a very strong group of 16u teams. Many of the top 16u players are also on their clubs’ 18u roster. My predictions assume these players will focus on the 16u age group. A number of the top 16u players will miss the Junior Olympics because they will play for the United States in the Cadet World Championships. The Super Finals will be our best chance to see most of the clubs at full strength.

  1. Mission. Great coaching and depth. If I’m reading the schedule correctly, I predict Mission and SD Dons will meet in the quarterfinals. That should be an intense game.
  2. Newport Beach. Newport is missing Curren Francisco. Many of their players are double rostered.
  3. Stanford. A well-coached team. Stanford beat Berkeley in the Pacific Zone JO qualifications. If they meet again, the game could go either way.
  4. Berkeley. I’m curious to see whether Berkeley will enter a team in the 18u age group next year.
  5. SD Dons
  6. SD Shores
  7. Lamorinda
  8. LA Premier

Newport, Mission, and Lamo are all in the same group and are in Jeff’s top 7. Tough group. Two 9-8 games so far. Looks like winner of Lamo & Mission will take the group and have a big advantage tomorrow.

I’ve only been watching the livestream at JSerra for 16s D1 and it’s been good there. Sounds like JFran on the call but not sure

It came across my desk that the pump room at Chapman University flooded so the games have been moved around for 16U Boys Division.

To teams & fans, I’d strongly recommend double checking the authoritative OneDrive / Hot!Results schedules.

Watched several games live, and rewatched a bunch of them on GOLS. I just want to say how much I appreciate Joel Francisco’s announcing. He’s great, and he knows who many of these kids are. Thanks, JFran, for adding such a personal touch!

Thank you @Marco! Also interesting to note that three teams that finished 2nd, 4th & 5th in 16u were all from the same Day 1 group. No. 1 seed finished 8th. think that shows seeding was very off.

Seeding is tough when combining Futures from SoCal, NorCal, and TX (ie everyone else). Here is how the 1 seeds performed in 16U and 18U divisions and where they came from. of the 6 divisions 3 of the 1 seeds came from NorCal Futures, 1 Socal, and 2 TX.

18U

D1 - 1 seed was from NorCal, finished 1st

D2 - 1 seed from NorCal, finished 15th

D3 - 1 seed from SoCal, finished 2nd

16U

D1 - 1 see from NorCal, finished 8th

D2 - 1 seed from TX, finished 10th

D3 - 1 seed from TX, finished 4th.

Another way of looking at it is what the eventual winner was seeded.

18U

D1 - 1

D2 - 5

D3 - 3

16U

D1 - 6

D2 - 2

D3 - 13

Only 1 real anomaly there.

That also speaks to how good the new bracketing is. Even when the initial seeding is sub-optimal, teams can still win their way into respectable final placements.

I think it was unfortunate that only D1 had a backdoor in the tournament structure. D2 and D3 grouped teams 1st thru 8th, 9th thru 16th, and 17th thru 24th after Day 1.

I agree new bracket format is good in that it mitigated the effects of imperfect seeding, but it didn’t eliminate them. Teams still had to live with the consequences of their opening pool assignments and early crossover matchups, especially in the race for the top four.
