Thread specific to the 14U Boys weekend.
Any interesting storylines come out of Day 1 of 14u Super Finals?
Not sure if it qualifies as an “interesting storyline,” but CIU has once again combined with Pride last-minute and added other outside talent to take themselves from a pretty second-tier team all season to now a podium contender both this weekend and at Junior Olympics.
The 4 undefeated teams in the top 12 bracket going straight to the quarterfinals tomorrow are:
1st in A: CIU (beat Patriot and Vanguard)
1st in B: La Jolla (beat Newport and Lamo)
1st in C: Norcal (beat Dons and OVAC)
1st in D: Mission (beat SD Shores and LA Premier)

This seems strange. CIU and Pride had separate teams at quals. You can’t make these kinds of changes after quals.
This group has been combined for a few months, and is the team that won 14u Coastal Quals.

La Jolla is overall the most complete team (IMO) after day 1. Really organized offense.
This year 14u age group has no dominant center like last year (marks/greenwich) or outside shooter (Wigo/CIU).
Lots of counter attacks on day 1. Will be interesting to see if that continues or if teams make adjustments.
La Jolla set offense versus NorCal set defense is probably the best matchup overall if we get to see it.

It looks like you’ll get your wish in seeing NORCAL take on La Jolla United in what is a rematch between most of these same kids of the 12u national championship game from two years ago where NORCAL stomped LJU.
The other semi-final game in 14u, between SD Dons and Mission, is also carrying historical baggage. I don’t know these two will be exchanging Christmas Cards anytime soon.
It is going to be a fun start to the last day of Super Finals. I’d say “get you popcorn ready”, but it is 8AM in Orange County, so get your Starbucks order ready.

Congratulations to La Jolla. That is a very well balanced and smart team. Opposing Coaches are going to need to go to the film room if they want to upset the clear #1 team in 14u.

Yes, Mission went up 3-0 and held a 9-7 lead with 5 minutes left in the game but La Jolla went on a tear from that point forward.

My only problem with the 14 U division I was how the PAC teams were seeded.
Final PAC results - Diablo, Lamo, NorCal, CCU and Stanford. Seeding in Superfinals for the zone - Lamo, NorCal, CCU, Stanford and Diablo. Feel bad for Diablo.
Why compete in the round robin and final weekend if the committee does not honor them. I don’t care about what athlete were there, who was sick, etc. Doesn’t mater. Use the five months of results.
