You might want to say “Newport has often held out their seniors” . In the past, specially at the beginning of girls Futures, where the teams were mostly HS teams and not Club team, Newport was one of the only teams that almost always played their seniors. I was there, I would see the seniors, and people would tease Ross as to why he had his seniors there.
Now things have kinda changed from that model and maybe closed HS clubs don’t bring their seniors
Legacy was playing their seniors this weekend at Futures.
Playing seniors = not about development… I’m confused.
Yeah I guess that’s true if your perspective is HS only.
With the closed clubs, it comes down to whether they would prefer to win a CIF Championship or the JOs.
The problem with Futures right now is not every team is approaching it the same way. During the early post COVID period, Futures was the only game in town when they hosted Super Finals in Utah because pools in CA were not open yet. And during this time, most teams were treating Futures as a way to develop their “future” high school varsity players: Laguna played as “SET Maroon,” Mater Dei played as “Vanguard Red,” and Foothill played as “SOCAL Lady Knights.” These teams did not play their outgoing seniors. The only team that did play their outgoing seniors at the time was Newport (Mamba, no one is arguing whether you are playing your seniors now).
As competition got stronger, Futures has become more relevant and is now a major marker for how quals seeding goes. As a result, Futures teams are now comprised of club rosters and no longer development high school rosters.
I personally liked it when Futures was a development league for high school teams. But when the rest of the teams are now entering their club rosters, it complicates things when one team decides to treat Futures as a developmental league and the parents/coaches feel compelled to explain their high school development team’s outcome in what is clearly now a club league.
It will be interesting to see how the seedings for SOPAC JO Quals go.
Sailor’s Cup this weekend for Youngers! This is usually the final tune-up before JO Quals for SOPAC teams. Who has their predictions and hot takes ready?

Will be interesting as some of the Development girls missing for NTSC
Does anyone have the SoCal Invite schedule for the older girls?
Anyone know or have girls club champs schedule?
12s and 16s have been posted
Any updates on USCC for girls?? Also your opinions on futures finals??
18U Girls:
Anyone else notice how some of the seedings were for Futures? Some of the lower-level teams that lost to top-performing teams still came out seeded 1, 2, 3, and 4. Doesn’t make sense how teams that beat them ended up seeded lower. Curious if anyone has insight into how the seeding was calculated?
Joe,
Could you be more specific? What Futures age group(s) are you talking about?
In 16U, Regency ranked last in their bracket but ended up in the top 8. Long Beach started low and ended up top 4. Greenwich missing for top 12 completely losing.
14U, both Greenwich and SB805 lost to Stanford but ended up higher.
Not sure I’m reading correctly but just curious and trying to understand how the seeding and final placements work.
I think in both cases, the top 8 were composed of the top four SoCal teams, top three NorCal teams, plus the best non-Cal team. How to combine the SoCal and NorCal rankings (from Futures leagues) is not a completely obvious task, and it was probably done reasonably well. You might agree that there are quite a few comparable teams in both brackets. Stanford 14s were seeded 5th and finished 7th, so I am not sure that they were seeded too low.
Any Idea when the girls session JO schedules will be released?
