Fantasy Water Polo - Fall 2025

@clark How many rounds are left for Fantasy season? Next week, I already see a sharp drop in games listed, which I assume is due to conference tournaments ?

Yes, I’m seeing a lot less matches too as the system doesn’t import placeholder matches.

I’m thinking we do something similar to MPSF Invite where we can pick first round matches for a tournament as those are knowable at the time of selection.

A cursory glance says that the conference tournaments happen weekend of 11/21 which is three rounds from now.

The NCAA tournament is weekend of 12/5.

I can’t find anything on the schedule for a D3 championship this year?

Without D3, it looks we’ll have an empty week in-between conference and NCAA tournaments unless there’s a conference that does a later tournament?

-

In any case, it sounds like we can either play out until NCAA first round or conference tournament first round.

Does anyone have strong feelings either way?

I’m inclined to play it out cause I’ll be looking at the games anyway.

We should probably wrap up the current structure on the weekend of 11/21, while all teams are still playing. After that, we could introduce a new betting format specifically for the NCAA tournament. I’m not sure how the current setup would work during the tournament, since only a handful of teams are competing and each of us would have just one or two teams to choose from.

I think we should continue our fantasy league through the D1 and D3 national championship tournaments, rewarding participants who selected schools that make it that far. It looks like the D3 tournament will be held on December 6 and 7.

We should let the league commissioner decide, since we’re all biased based on our individual rosters. The teams each of us ended up with are largely random, given that the draft process was randomized and path-dependent on previous rounds’ picks.

More established Fantasy leagues, such as Football, end before postseason.

Fantasy football doesn’t usually continue into the NFL postseason for a few key reasons (courtesy of ChatGPT):

1. Fairness and availability

  • Once the NFL regular season ends, most teams are eliminated — only 14 out of 32 make the playoffs.
  • That means most fantasy rosters lose players, since those players’ real teams are done for the year.
  • If someone drafted mostly from playoff-bound teams (like the 49ers or Chiefs), they’d have a huge unfair advantage over others with eliminated players.

2. Resting starters

  • In the last regular-season week (and definitely during playoffs), NFL coaches rest key players once playoff seeding is secure.
  • That kills fantasy reliability — your star QB or RB might not even play in the championship week.

3. League design

  • Fantasy football was built around the NFL’s 18-week regular season, where every team plays (and stats are predictable).
  • Extending into the postseason would mean completely re-drafting or resetting teams, because player pools shrink each week.

4. Alternative exists

  • There are special formats called “NFL Playoff Fantasy Leagues” where you pick or draft only from playoff teams (and your players earn points as long as their real teams stay alive).
    • These usually start after Week 18, with a new draft just for the postseason.

Without getting too nerdy, statistically, each person will have 0-2 teams in the NCAA tournament. The largest advantage is whether one has any of the 1-4 teams (UCLA, USC, Stanford/Cal, or Fordham) and particularly, whether they have UCLA (assume to be #1) as they will play against D2 team, a game that will likely end at a high score (20+ points). Anyone that luckily got 5-8, their best bet is limited to ‘lose,’ i.e., 8 points. This example illustrates one skew.

@clark you might be aware of that , but the dashboard suggests you didn’t select anything this week. @jeff only has 3 , maybe his teams are resting or part of a union

Thanks for alerting!

The system definitely dropped Jeff’s picks …and mine too.
I would never have forgotten to put picks in! haha

I’m inclined to close the season before conference play, we’re going to have a low inventory of games once we get to 11/23.

I’m thinking that we try a new format for the conference and NCAA tournaments; would love to get something figured out that can work for things like MPSF invite and other formats.

Any strong objections and I’m fine to put it to a vote of our players here where I am not voting to prevent a tie.

Idea for MPSF Invite and conference tournaments - everyone makes picks on final placings and correct picks result in bonus points applied to fantasy season totals or separate postseason standings

Just to add some excitement to this week, @Limey and @anon39560856 are on opposite sides of a match today. Limey is betting on a strong Pacific defense against UCLA, while NorCalDad is taking the other side, backing the UCLA offense to score against Pacific.

@clark I happened to notice that, but for future Fantasy improvements, it might be fun to highlight matches where players are taking opposing sides.

As for this specific matchup, the teams have met 33 times in the past 20 years, with only one Pacific win. UCLA has averaged about 12 goals per game with a variation of around three. Their last meeting, in September 2023, was a home game for Pacific and ended 20–12, the highest-scoring contest between the two teams in the past two decades. A repeat of that outcome would be good news for NorCalDad.

And it is NorCalDad. Albeit, selecting the game as ‘allowed goals’ would have been a record for this category this year.

This is a great idea!

It’s pretty trivial in the database to find the highest scoring selection by category, so we’ll definitely be able to do that as a post season recap.

The weekly recap is here and it was definitely not late cause I was avoiding looking at my abysmal performance.

Big congrats to @WaterPoloTrevor for claiming his first(?) podium with a first place finish. He was carried by his Fordham Rams.
@anon39560856 took second place this week with a very strong showing in Points Allowed with SJSU over CBU.
@2pointer edged out @wp2024 for 3rd place with Johns Hopkins continue a strong fantasy season.

There is some serious drama going into final stretch of the season, here’s the scoop:
This is the final round of the our fantasy league.
We do not have any more matches available after this round and there are only 20 matches remaining in our database.

@wp2024 is currently in first but @2pointer is within striking distance. It appears that game inventory is very low so expect to see a ton of variance in the upcoming matches.

In the battle for bronze, @WaPo is protecting a lead but @anon39560856 and @Jeff are both tied for 4th with a mere 8 point difference.

@orig-fantasy-crew make sure that you get your picks in by tomorrow night. For the inaugural season, the top three finishers will receive a commemorative prize.

For the playoffs, I’ll make an NCAA postseason mini game where we predict the results and scores of the semi-finals. More details to come but we will do a test with some of conference tournaments.

It was flagged to me by @wp2024 & @anon39560856 that some of the players only have a handful of teams participating. Please fill in as many picks as you can

It will be a dual with @2pointer . I only have 3 picks this week and will score max 40pts. Any score above 60 and @2pointer is the Fantasy 2025 King.

That is a tall order. Pressure is on!

@clark It seems that either @Limey @WaPo @WPolo9 did not select matches this week or there is a glitch in the system.

Please DM if picks were dropped

I see no selection for me to choose for this week as I am certain that I had my picks from several weeks back! Let me know how to make my picks, thank you

picks temporarily re-opened for the next 2 hours
