Fantasy Water Polo - Fall 2025

I’ve been cooking something up for a while now and would love for you to give it a shot.

Today, I’m excited to announce the soft launch of a new Fantasy Water Polo website.

Think like a new restaurant just opened:
Some of the finishing touches are still coming together and the staff is still getting up to speed, but the main ingredients are on the plate. :slight_smile:

Here’s what you need to know:

Instead of drafting individual players, you draft teams.

From your drafted teams, you and up to 5 friends form a squad and make weekly picks based on how those teams perform in real-life college matches.

With your teams, you make one selection for each of the following rules:

  1. Win: 8 points if your team wins a match
  2. Points scored: +1 point for every goal your team scores
  3. Points allowed: Points scored = (22 - opponent goals scored)
  4. Point differential: +/- 1 point for your teams point differential
  5. Loss (for the haters): +8 points if your picked team loses a match

You can keep it casual and just compete with your friends OR take your squad public and get featured on the site-wide leaderboard against other Water Polo Exchange users.

:right_arrow: It’s $9.99 total for your whole squad—just under $2 per person for the season.
For now, you must have an account on this forum to play. Your fantasy account will be tied to your forum account.

Create a squad today!

Season Timeline:

  1. Starting today, you can create a squad and begin inviting your friends. You can have as many squads as you like. (Keep an eye out for the ModSquad and ClarkVsTheWorld :wink: )
  2. As soon as you’re in a squad, set your draft order.
  3. The squad owner has a button to “lock picks”. Once that’s clicked, we do a random order snake draft based on step #2.
  4. After each player has their teams, you’ll be able to make selections for matches.
  5. This week’s match selection window closes this Friday (8/29) morning. After that, all selection deadlines will be Monday morning. I’ll be entering in the full schedule over the coming days, I’m opening this now so you all have time to make your picks.
  6. We will only import matches that are known before the selection deadline, so you might only be able to select the first day of a tournament.
  7. As the season progresses, I’ll share some aggregated data on which teams are generating the most points and any other fun things that shake out of this.

A few quick updates:

  • No matter how many users are in your squad, you will only draft 8 teams. This is meant to keep balance the public game by only having the best* 8 teams in a single squad.
  • As far as I can tell, I’ve entered all 613(!) matches. If you try to make a selection and it’s not there. Please ping me.
  • The mobile web experience is … not good. I’ll be fixing that up in the next couple days.

*When making my selections, I realized I screwed up my draft. By only selecting teams that I thought were going to have awesome seasons, making a selection for the loss of the week was actually pretty difficult.

I wanted to thank, and I’m sure the rest of the community shares the appreciation, to Clark on this effort.

No water polo markets on Draftking !

Happy and honored to have @rolled1 on the squad. I have no idea how to set it up and what it means.

@clark can you please help? Many thanks

You can make a squad solo and still play against other folks on the board.

You can have a max of 6 users per squad. Each user gets their top 8 teams for the season.

For example, the four moderators are all in a group called ModSquad. The four of us are competing against each other in our squad but our point totals are going to be stacked against the other squads.

Let’s say in round 1, we have outcome:

@jeff scored 35 points

@WaterPoloTrevor scored 33

@Limey scored 28

and I scored 25

Jeff might be the point leader in the ModSquad but our total is put up against the other squads.

If @WPWednesday also had a squad, Wes might score 35 points and Clay might score 33.

The leader board would have something like

  1. ModSquad: 121
  2. WPWednesday: 68

There’s an advantage in the game for having more people in our squad (hopefully, balance by dilution of picks). If it gets a little unwieldy, we can make divisions based on number of participants.

so if I already paid the $9.99 for the season, anyone joining the squad will be free, but add to the total points of the squad?

I am happy to sponsor the entire cost and have better experts, likely anyone on this board, join my squad.

@rolled1 you are in and let’s recruit some winner on this board to join.

@clark – technically, how do I add @rolled1 ?

No problem! Here’s what’s gonna happen:

  1. I’m going to reset @wp2024 ‘s picks and re-open the squad
  2. @rolled1 , please DM @wp2024 your email.
  3. @wp2024 should enter the email to invite (gif attached)
  4. Follow the instructions on step-2: https://waterpolo-exchange.onrender.com
  5. Once @wp2024 is ready to go with everyone on the squad, he can lock everyone’s picks and start the season. Do NOT hit this until you have everyone you’d like on your squad (another gif attached)

For those following along at home, these instructions work for you too :slight_smile:

Correct, one charge per squad!

i sent a DM with my email thanks!

Sorry! I just used your handle as a known duo in the water polo world as an example.

Is the squad bit somewhat clear or is there something I need to do better explaining?

It’s a little tough cause it’s not quite a traditional league.

If anyone else wants to join THE squad: rolled1, norcaldad, & wp2024. I am sponsoring so free. Let us know here and will add you (DM me @wp2024 your email) . We will need to lock the squad at 5pm PT to make the picks for tomorrow.

In of there is room and will read to see how to add squads, is this weekly?

Your squad and the teams that you draft for the squad are good for the season.

Each week, you pick matches for the teams you drafted and get the corresponding points.

You can join anytime throughout the season.

I’m working on clearing up a lot of the confusion on the product itself. But in the meantime, please keep questions coming everyone :slight_smile: it helps me understand where we need to be better.

@clark suggestion that will make the selection more challenging and skill-based : on the win / loss picks give more points if an underdog wins and vice versa , more technically complicated to implement give more points based on the diff in rank.

@clark

A. Will you publish the standings on Sunday nights?

B. It seems that you are building a database of all games with their scores. Is it something you can share with the participants?

C. I see that our squad is #1 of 3 . Are there only three squads? After my proposal of sponsoring HS teams? What about all those pundits on the college thread?

Planning on publishing tonight or tomorrow (with a recap and other highlights!)

Yes, I’m still making the data fit for consumption but planning on sharing out scores more generally.

Uptake has been a little slow but that’s ok for a new feature. I think I haven’t done a great job making this consumer friendly / marketable so I’m going to keep working on that, updates will be published here

Week 1 Recap!

@wp2024’s squad edged out the moderators by 9 points with a final score of 129 - 120

We had a tie for most points scored in the round by a single user. Two people scored 66 points!

The most points earned on a single selection was 24 from Air Force’s victory over Mt St Mary’s.

Looking at the schedule, I moved our selection deadline for this week until Thursday. I’m not seeing games on the calendar until the 5th.

You can fill in your selections in the upcoming round tab. Please let me know if I’ve missed importing a game.

If you’d like to join for the upcoming rounds, please reach out to me and I can help get you setup!
