Here is a link to the Google document for next weekend’s Memorial Cup, which will be hosted by Bellarmine:
Here are my predictions for this year’s Memorial Cup:
- CdM
- Long Beach Wilson
- Bishop’s
- Foothill
- Saint Francis
- Archie Williams
Will this event be streamed?
An earlier announcement said that GOLS was streaming but I don’t see it there.
Games involving Foothill High School will stream here: https://www.youtube.com/@goaliedadstudio

Completely unacceptable reffing in the Foothill/Bishop game. In the third a coach asked #2 if he was ok. The kid said clear as can be “I got slapped in the face but it’s ok”. The refs demonstratively said you are out of the game for dropping the F word. The coach correctly said he never said an expletive. The ref loudly argued he heard it. Bad news for the ref is the live stream had a clear microphone right behind him to prove he was wrong. He was so adamant while being so wrong. Ref yelled “I heard it no discussion he is out”. Bishop went on a roll right after so likely motivated. This ref needs to watch this and apologize to the player as it was so clear and the ref was yelling about it while wrong. If you want to watch it you can find the long delay in the second. Keep in mind the graphic will say 1st qtr. The score was 7-4 at the time.
every year with out fail. worst ref. total power trip…
Same guy? If so it may be worth the coach submitting the tape to someone that evaluates refs. I don’t know the score anymore but this could easily influence the game removing a starting shooter. Rarely do you get such a clear audio. This isn’t a water polo judgement play.
Yes same referee. Wait until he refs a bellarmine game. Biggest homer in the game.
Just listened. Plain as day what he said and it isn’t what the ref claimed. What a fool!
Timestamp: 21:29 (and thank you @goaliedadstudio for sharing the video).
Bishops #2: I cannot imagine him dropping an expletive. That said, I’ve only had 6 years of experience sharing a club roster.
Did the ref give him a major misconduct or just a regular M?
The hand signal the ref used was … not consistent with a MAM or a M (no hand rolling motion, just standard exclusion of pulling ball out, showing cap number, and pointing to exclusion zone).
That should be sorted out ASAP. I’ve had some experience with refs issuing a M, then reporting it to CIF as a major misconduct (thereby putting the excluded player in harm’s way of forcing a forfeit of games s/he played in before serving a suspension that no one knew about).
Hopefully someone made the coach aware of this video for multiple reasons.
That ref also officiated CCS Open Boys Finals last year… let’s just say it was not reffed very well at all. He always goes on a power trip… there’s always some sort of drama… it’s crazy he’s still getting high level games to officiate cause both teams lose when he does

Clearly the wrong call
With that said, yelling “I just got slapped in the face… but whatever” across the pool during stoppage is going to piss off any ref.
And if it does piss off a ref, then telling the player to stop with the commentary should be enough. Not making up an excuse to roll them. Unfortunately, a lot of bad calls in water polo because of “pissed off refs”.
Thanks for filming! I don’t think you need to make excuses for poor officiating. His coach asked him directly if “he was ok” as he was clearly stunned and was replying back to his coach and not providing rolling commentary…
Clearly the ref was in error. Clearly. Saying “but whatever” is snarky enough that a verbal warning would’ve been appropriate. Exclusion would be excessive but I’ve seen exclusions for glares and gestures multiple times.
Edit: pretty sure a player on Bishops got rolled v La Jolla last week for gesturing at the ref after a non call. Refs share notes, maybe that contributed to a short leash. But bad call regardless.
It wasn’t a look or snarky comment. The ref said he said the F word and he didn’t. The ref was adamantly wrong. Unacceptable. No reason to try and find another reason that the ref did what he did. We don’t need to get in his head. He said why. He was wrong. Only reason.
Talking back to the ref or gesturing at one isn’t remotely comparable to this.
