Santa Margarita water polo coach Brian Weathersby resigns

“After careful consideration, I made the decision to step down from my coaching role due to internal circumstances that no longer aligned with my values or coaching philosophy,” Weathersby said in a statement. “My focus has always been on fostering a positive, disciplined and respectful team environment.”

WTF? That’s quite a statement.

and interesting timing too. pretty sure he was coaching socal 14u boys team

The one thing about Coach Wethersby is that he is a straight shooter, never have to guess where he’s at. Best of luck to him and what he decides to do next.

Interesting, two coaches gone from high profile programs in the Trinity League in one week.

SM will be a premium spot for multiple years and with the right coach, a long-term stronghold.

  1. Top-tier facilities with good financial support.
  2. OCWPC 16U, which is filled with SM rising JR, has done very well this club season.
  3. Four strong field players are returning starters: Evan Wu, Tanner Bachhuber (both 2026); Logan McGann (2027), Tanner Gorman (2028).
All four have more than enough talent to be first/second team All-CIF-SS.

Add a top notch coach and goalie and I predict a top 8 statewide and top 4 or better CIF-SS.
Coaches- If you are considering a change this WILL BE a premium landing spot.

(I DO NOT have a son playing for SM next year and have not been paid for this promotion of the team! It’s just that good of an opportunity.

I agree that SM has some strong players returning, but I think there are some program challenges that come with this job. You can argue that SM is third in line of parochial school options behind JSerra and Mater Dei, unless you live out there already. SM also doesn’t have a dedicated feeder club, which is important to building and developing a top level high school program. Some of the kids are playing club at SoCal, and Mission has a history of pulling kids out of OCWP. Great school, great facilities and probably a place where a good coach can have success, especially if the coach can establish a club pipeline (or offer the kids considering Mission a different culture). :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

That’s awesome! Remember him from our days at OC, great coach all the way around, thought he was at USC.

Strong hire. If he can cut a deal with OCWP to establish a real pipeline he should be able to build something. Or, start up his own club and call it Rancho and give Mission a run for its money.

Wow, so leaving USC ?

Interesting. I wonder if he’s still at USC? It would be hard to maintain both positions I would think.

He’s the 18u boys coach at Patriot. Maybe they’ll now split between SM and Beckman to have less kids disappear to JSerra?

Now that qualifies as a solid hire and a sign SM is moving back to elite status.

Club Impact Prediction:
OCWPC gets the OC EAGLES/OC Blue and OCWPC for all others— San Juan Hills, Dana Hills and some San Clemente. Similar to Vanguard Blue and Red (Black on 18s) a few years ago.

Pure speculation, no info.
That usually works well, right?

Either way, GREAT hire for SM.
