JO Quals Girls Olders

Has anyone been checking the JO olders games out this weekend. I heard there there have been upsets?

several upsets in PAC and SOPAC , surprising !

I think biggest surprise is CHAWP. Lost to Newport by 5ish, beat SoCal, beat Mater Dei, beat Set, beat San Clemente

Word on deck is CHAWP 16u girls brought in 2 Hungarians.

It was a dogfight for the final 2 spots in the championship division at 16u for SOPAC. Two one-goal games involving teams who had missed the top 4 by losing in a shootout. Way too few (6) championship allocations for SOPAC 16u girls given the caliber and parity of the teams competing.

Mission and Newport could make two teams each and place 1,2,3,4. There bench is very good ! Great to see those two teams battle at 16’s ! They are both deep and run a very fine tuned system !

I also heard they brought up to two14u studs as well. Can the teams not stop some 14u players? No big deal to me, I don’t have a problem with it. Everyone keeps saying that teams like Patriot, Regency were also shuffling players cause they underestimated some teams. Most clubs do bring in some international players anyway. SoCal has been doing it for years Helps the sport and helps kids learn other cultures. If a team can’t stop 1-2 Hungarians that’s on them.

So lemme make sure I understand this -

16U Girls

PSW gets 5 spots in Championship, out of 7 teams that signed up for quals.

SPA gets 6 spots in Championship, out of 14 teams that signed up for quals.

Those 6 Championship from SPA do NOT include Regency or San Clemente. Both are pretty clearly top 20 teams in the country, with Academy kids, the works. Both are now in Classic to duke it out for 49th place in the country. But those 5 Championship from PSW DO include Shores B and Seaside. These teams would lose by 20 to SPA Classic teams. Come on.

And lest I be accused of punching down, I’m not even going after MDW who gets 5 Championship spots. That’s 5/24 of your Gold Division right there, unless some midwest coach goes international (which is fair game since at this point literally every college coach is doing the same - good luck with June 15 crickets y’all unless your country code is something other than +1).

USAWP you need to fix this crap. This is a national championship tournament, not a charity participation trophy handout. You say you’re using USAWP membership to allocate spots. Does that include age/sex stratification? Pretty obviously not. So PSW has a lot of boys playing polo - and therefore the girls get JO slots, got it. Does it include HS players that require USAWP membership to train with their HS teams, but who literally started polo at 15 and can’t swim a 200y without stopping and play polo in jammers? Got it. Does it include masters, ref, and coach memberships? Parent memberships? So many insane ways to get to such an asinine allocation, but it clearly is asinine. If you guys don’t step in fix this, these teams that are getting ripped off by a bad algo will just do Futures and call it a summer next year.

I feel your pain. SPA should have more allocations. Would.

Would it be surprising if somehow Regency/SC gets in. Those coaches have a lot pull

I would say Rancho Tsunami should get the come out of no where medal. 5 years ago they didn’t really exist on girls and now platinum qualification finish. Great job to those kids.

Saw several 14’s playing up on top 18 girls teams. Getting ready for high school varsity teams. Most of those teams use the 16’s as the junior varsity team for the high school.

Patriot beat CHAWP and their Hungarians and 14u studs by 7 to secure 5th.

Tsunami has 2 stellar goalies and I hear 2 Italians. Let’s give credit where credit is due.

What happened at PAC looks like it really shook up the team rankings. some results seem unexpected and teams didn’t end up where they were initially seeded. Few more games still ongoing not finished yet

They played well for sure, ended up losing to Patriot in final game. Patriot only lost one game in OT shootout, played really well! SOPAC ladies on fire :fire: per usual.

Futures this weekend for girls. Should be a competitive tournament for the girls. Such a good format and quality league. Girls side gets better each year. This should be the final big test for lots of the major clubs before junior Olympics.

It was a nothing burger. CHAWP didn’t play starters

It what sense CHAWP has been the biggest surprise? The fact that they brought in two Hungarian players or that those two international players helped them to jump from the 10th seeded position to the 6th place? I assume that the former was a much bigger surprise than the latter

Blah,

18u Girls is probably the age group where your criticism of allocation algorithm makes sense but even there it is fifty-fifty proposition any given year.

In 2025, it would have made a lot of sense, since the 6th best SPA team finished 12th in Platinum and 7th, 8th, and 9th best SPA finishes were 1st, 2nd, and 4th in Classic.

In 2024, it would have probably made less sense: 5th best SPA team finished 19th in Platinum, and 6th best SPA team finished 4th in Gold (i.e. 28th overall).

In 2023, again it would have probably made a bit less sense since 7th best SPA team finished 22nd in Platinum, 8th best SPA team finished 4th in Gold (28th overall), and 9th best SPA team finished 4th in Classic.

But in 2022 , it would made a lot of sense since 5th, 6th, and 7th best SPA team finished 12th-14th in Platinum.

SOCAL does not ‘bring in’ Internationals. If an international player reaches out, just the same as a New York, or Chicago kid could. So then, SOCAL tells them that they would be happy to have them, if they want to come. Just like all teams that are not ‘closed teams’ would do. It’s a prestigious tournament and kids want to come and play in it.
Also international players have two legs and two arms just like American players, so people, stop making them out to be Superman or Superwoman
Sorry pmj93, this is no directed at you

This is so lame. JOs and this sport should be the team you play with all year. Really disrespectful to the chawp girls who played all year too. It won’t work out either. And development suffers. US water polo.
