As Jeff reports above, Newport Harbor defeated Harvard, 16-7, for the Elite 8 title.
Here’s some historical fun facts: It is Newport Harbor’s second Elite 8 title in three years; they have been in every final game played since 2019. This was also Harvard’s best finish since 2019 when they won it. The tournament started in 2016. Prior champions: Harvard (2016, 2018 and 2019); Oaks Christian (2017); Sacred Heart Prep (2021); Newport Harbor (2022); JSerra (2023); and not played in 2020.
Watched most of these games and the obvious take away is Newport is 10 goals better than anyone else out there. (Might get a close game against if they draw NCAA 15-20 team.) They look unbeatable for the next two years and their 2nd line is in the 2nd-5th top teams.
Harvard Westlake at full strength is the solid 2nd best team out there but no match for Newport. Last year the Semis were school-hosted, if this is the case again I don’t see anyone taking out HW at their place.
Only Oaks gave Newport a close game for 2.5 quarters. Max Burstein is getting better and better, Pepperdine got a solid commit. Oaks’ 2m D is solid but leaves open looks for good shooters. You certainly don’t want to play them (or HW) on the road for CIF.
JSerra looks very beatable. Huge holes in their starting lineup, major drop off on the bench and Taylor Bell is carrying this team on offense. Perhaps Gavin Conant fills this gap when healthy. If they drop to seed 3 or 4, I predict a first-round upset in CIF but certainly out in the semis.
Would have loved to see CDM in this tourney or the North-South. They are marching through all the 2nd level tourneys and it would be nice to see if they belong in the top 4 or not.
Fun to see all these games streamed, nice job HW for making that happen. Newport can start measuring ring sizes, everyone else is playing for 2nd.
Agreed, OCL. Newport is deep.
I view HW, Oaks and JSerra as equals with different strengths and Cathedral just outside, but young and well positioned in the next couple years. Expected more from Sacred Heart.
I know JSerra graduated generational talent but they looked un-JSerra like in the tournament, even with a talented starting group. Heard that Birdsall separated from the program this week, which would be the latest of several prior departures.
Elite 8 is a well run tournament, great facility, and I always appreciate their live streaming, but I wouldn’t mind adding two at large teams each year, to capture up and coming teams, with CDM being an example.
Looking forward to the North-South and a larger, diverse field.
Unfortunate to see a talented kid quit mid season if that is true. Kids and parents need to understand, In life you may not always like your boss or co-workers. Yes, you can quit and look for a new job, but for some that is not always the best life choice, so learn to deal with adversity. Let your kids deal with with an coach who is trying to make your kid a man! no Idea if this is the case here but have seen it happen in our local teams.
From what I’ve heard out of JS, full blame on PB is not justified. Word leaked out—or was communicated directly—he was going to transfer out after the season. Other variables existed too, but the timing can’t be fully blamed on the athlete.
I take some blame for blowing up this topic. The info shared by Kickout that a player is no longer with JSerra is good info and Rolled1’s GENERAL statement is right on, we all hope these athletes develop both athletically and in life skills.
But please, we’re talking about a high school sophomore. Who among us… moving on.
