Conant will be back, and yes, he would have definitely contributed, but he would have had to change his name to Dodd to make up 9 points.
That kid Jordan Hanna from Mater Dei dropped 7 goals on De La Salle… impressive.
Brunswick (Greenwich, CT - only team from USA) is playing in Barcelona this coming weekend in international U19 tournament. Played in this tournament last year.

Here’s the link to the 2024 Villa Park Classic (Thurs.-Sat., Sept. 19-21):
Why is whoever organizes the AFC tournament using this schedule format? Makes no sense. Why on earth would Menlo go to this tournament instead of North vs South like they normally do?
Results of 2024 Villa Park Classic (Thurs.-Sat., Sept. 19-21):
Semi-finals: Santa Margarita 10, Buena of Ventura 9; San Clemente 10, Yucaipa 8. Third: Buena of Ventura 12, Yucaipa 7. Final: San Clemente 11, Santa Margarita 10.
NOTE: San Clemente wins title after finishing second in the 2021 and 2022 tourneys. This is a big week for them. In addition to their five tournament wins, they beat Laguna Beach, 20-7 (Mon., Sept. 16), and San Juan Hills, 6-3 (Wed., Sept. 18). This comes after their 16th place finish last Saturday at the South Coast Tournament, 9th best among CIF/SS teams.

What are your predictions for this year’s S&R Tournament Jeff. Many solid team’s competing this year.
Here are my predictions, often wrong, for this weekend’s S&R Sport Tournament. It’s a crapshoot after Corona del Mar and Foothill.
- Corona del Mar
- Foothill
- Redwood. The possible 3rd place game between Redwood and Long Beach Wilson could go either way.
- Long Beach Wilson
- Mira Costa. Mira Costa could finish higher if junior center Lucas Pearce plays.
- Orange Lutheran. The first round game between OLu and San Ramon Valley game could go either way.
- Huntington Beach. The first round game between HB and Los Alamitos could go either way.
- Davis
- Los Alamitos
- San Ramon Valley
Today’s semifinals:
Corona del Mar vs. Long Beach Wilson
Foothill vs. Redwood
Results of S&R Sport Tournament, Fri., Sept. 27-Sat., Sept. 28.
Semi-finals: Corona del Mar 13, Long Beach 8; Foothill 12, Redwood 10. Third: Redwood 11, Long Beach Wilson 7. Final (3:35 p.m.): Corona del Mar 15, Foothill 9.
Historical Fun Fact: This is CDM’s second S&R Sport title, and first in 24 years. This year’s final was noteworthy for pitting two frequent second place finishers against each other. Corona del Mar had only won the tourney once before – in 2000. They had finished second six times – in 2016, 2014, 2011, 2006, 2001 and 1994 (inaugural year of tourney). Foothill has never won the tourney they co-founded with Long Beach Wilson. They have finished second now a total of eight times – 2024, 2021, 2017, 2015, 2004, 1997, 1996 and 1995.
Here is a link to the website for next weekend’s Elite 8 Tournament. The Elite 8 Tournament and the North vs. South Challenge set the standard for how high school and college water polo tournaments should showcase the sport.
Will be at Elite8 watching top high school teams compete and see if anyone can challenge Newport at the half way mark of the season!
With another opportunity to be dead wrong in public, here are my predictions for the Elite 8 Tournament:
- Newport Harbor
- JSerra. JSerra is still missing one of its best players.
- Harvard-Westlake. Should be at full strength.
- Sacred Heart. Should be at full strength for the first time this year. Thursday’s game between Sacred Heart and Oaks Christain could go either way.
- Oaks Christian
- Cathedral Catholic. Cathedral Catholic will give Oaks Christian or Sacred Heart a good game in the 5th place game.
- Loyola. The 7th place game between Loyola and Bishop’s could go either way.
- Bishop’s
Last year for the Elite 8, they provided the scores via a link to a PDF that they updated regularly. I’m not seeing that on the tournament site so far this year. Here are most of the scores from Thursday’s competition, found on other sources:
Newport Harbor 16, Loyola 7
JSerra 14, Bishop’s 11
Harvard-Westlake 20, Cathedral Catholic 19
Oaks Christian vs. Sacred Heart Prep. Outcome not known.
Oaks 10-9 over Sacred Heart according to the HW water polo Twitter account.
The HW/Cathedral Catholic game was decided in sudden-death overtime.
Oaks Christian beat Sacred Heart 10-9.
The scores are posted, not in real time, on the instagram site for Harvard-Westlake water polo.
That HW / Cathedral Catholic game was so good. CC was down 3 points with a minute and a half to go in the fourth. The last 90 seconds of regulation was insane with CC storming back with a 3-0 run, putting in the tying goal as time expired.
Two overtime periods followed with the teams tied, and finally it went to sudden death with HW getting a golden goal to pull out the win.
Newport 8, Cathedral Catholic 3. The score was 5-3 after 3 quarters. Cathedral has a very good team.
