It seems that high-level games nowadays are almost 50% decided by 6-on-5 situations, and from observation alone (though I’m not sure the data fully supports this), many power-play goals appear to come from the post. The stat book was published very quickly, and a large amount of data is now available for analysis.

With the current rules, and with defensive strategies that are more than willing to take an exclusion to prevent any shooting opportunity inside 5 meters, what reward is there for offenses to work for action shots, other than counters? Far better to work the ball around until an exclusions happens. Even more so if you have a shooter or two with decent percentage on the foul and shoot from outside the 6. I think the increased proportion of shots from the post is a reaction to the “goal box” rule. If a passer can park inside the 2 with a short pass to the post, it’s a great shot for any team with good post players.
