2025 Boys ODP Teams

Polames,

This could easily be the case. But the best 2-3 players in the pool in such a game would be from a zone outside of CA. If we accept that the main purpose of the ODP program is to develop elite talent, it makes much more sense to have, say, SEZ or MNT team than SOPAC C team at the Championship.
The format for Cadet and Dev with 18 teams looks fine- theoretically every team could win the championship. The Youth format has only 16 teams.

68 showcases seed off 68 challenge by position, with light manual review. Nearly every game is competitive and the experience is much closer to collegiate play where players aren’t with HS and club teammates they’ve played with for years. Would be a fantastic change to ODP

Used to be what Futures was before it expanded massively.

I will save people the jenga of trying to find on their website. Sure wish they fixed search on that thing.

Interesting. The full DOB instead of Birth Year in the evaluation rosters does not appear to be accidental but rather a decision that has carried over to the public posting.

Can someone please clarify why PSW is named white and not blue? Thanks

This seems problematic to me. Maybe put month and year, but exact birth dates is public sharing of material personal information.

Not sure what the concern is? Now you can send your favorite ODP player a birthday card. Every college team and USA WP posts “Happy Birthday” on social media for players. Do you want to remove the birthday from your drivers license incase it gets stolen? Maybe I am missing something…

Identity theft can take many forms and you have whole fleets of individuals, bots and entities pursuing this every day. With just a name and birthdate scammers may open new accounts in your name. In other cases, fraudsters may use your personal information to open new accounts in your name with financial institutions, lenders, and/or credit card companies. Some scammers also create fake social media profiles to target your friends and family.

This past year a junior in college we know, went to apply for a credit card only to find out he already had three cards in his name.

It’s not as benign as it seems.

Reds vs Whites is more czarist Russia. Red vs Blue is US politics.

In the end, does it matter?

The 2025 ODP national championship tournament will be held this weekend in Northern California. The strict playing-time rules for this tournament favor teams that have deep rosters. The rosters for the PAC zone youth teams are as deep as any zone, including the SPA zone. This depth suggests that 2025 will be a good season for the top Northern California high school programs. Although a lot can happen between now and the start of the high school season, I believe Sacred Heart Prep and Miramonte are likely to finish in the top 3 to 6 and De La Salle and Campolindo are likely to finish in the top 10 in my unofficial end-of-season rankings. I predict Cathedral Catholic will finish third or fourth and Brunswick (if the California Interscholastic Federation allows them to participate in CIF tournaments) will finish in the top 10. If my too-early predictions are correct, there will be only four Southern Section schools in the end-of-season top 10. I can’t remember the last time that happened.

With all due respect to the teams and players I didn’t mention, here are my predictions, often wrong, for this weekend’s ODP youth tournament:

  1. SPA Red. Just one Class of 2025 player but a very good one: Taylor Bell (JSerra and Mission, Princeton). Two Class of 2027 players: center defender Logan McGann (Santa Margarita and SOCAL) and goalie James Love (Yucaipa and Rancho Tsunami). SPA Red has four players from JSerra, three from Newport Harbor, two from Corona Del Mar, and two from Santa Margarita. I can’t remember the last time SPA Red didn’t have at least one Mater Dei player. Jonas Ransford (JSerra Class of 2026 and Mission, “Big 4”?) is generally considered to be the best junior goalie. LH center Tyler Anderson (JSerra Class of 2026 and Mission, “Big 4”?) may have the highest ceiling of any junior. The SPA Red roster lists just one center and two center defenders. By comparison, PAC Red has two center defenders and three potential “Big 4” centers. Connor Ohl (Newport Harbor Class of 2026 and Newport Beach, “Big 4”?) is one of the top four or five juniors in the country. I’m not sure why he isn’t playing for SPA Red this weekend.
  2. PAC Red. Three Class of 2025 players and four Class of 2027 players: center defender Nathan Greenberg (Archie Williams and SHAQ), Brady Hassett (Miramonte and CCU), Will Maguy (Campolindo and CCU), and Ellis Culleton (Campolindo and CCU). Four PAC Red players play for CCU and three play for Atherton and Sacred Heart Prep. PAC Red is probably the fastest team in the tournament. It also has the most depth at center, with Gian Sarimsakci (St. Ignatius Class of 2025 and San Francisco Water Polo Club, Cal), Oliver Marcin (Sacred Heart Class of 2026 and Atherton, Stanford?), and Tristan Tucker (Miramonte Class of 2026 and Lamorinda, “Big 4”?). Marcin is one of the top 3 or 4 juniors in the country. Clay Carrington (Sacred Heart and Atherton, “Big 4”?) is as good as any LH attacker in the country. If it seems like goalies Murdoch Baker Matsuoka (Sacred Heart Class of 2026 and Atherton) and Will Corr (De La Salle Class of 2026 and Diablo Alliance) have been around a long time, it’s because they have been at least part-time starters since their freshman years.
  3. CST Red. Three Class of 2025 players, no Class of 2027 players, and five players from Channel Islands United. Channel Islands could surprise some people at the Junior Olympics. CST Red has three players from Oaks Christian, two from Mira Costa, and two from Buena. I can’t remember the last time a CST Red team had only one player from Harvard-Westlake
  4. PAC Blue. Four Class of 2025 players and two Class of 2027 players. Keep an eye on goalie Jack Elder (Las Lomas Class of 2026 and Lamorinda). Elder, 6’7”, is fairly new to water polo but has drawn the interest of “Big 4” coaches. I’m a little surprised Elder, Soren Jessen (Terra Linda Class of 2025 and SHAQ, Fordham), Sawyer Goldberg (Redwood Class of 2025 and San Francisco Water Polo Club), and Jake Carrera (Archie Williams and North Irvine Beast Boys, U.C. Davis) aren’t playing for PAC Red. PAC Blue finished ahead of PAC Red last year. It won’t surprise me if that happens again this year.
  5. PSW. The PSW Zone has one team in the youth tournament. Seven of their players are from Del Mar. PSW is one of the two youngest teams in my top 8, with two Class of 2025 players and six Class of 2027 players, including center/attacker Kenly Axline (Cathedral Catholic and Del Mar) and center defender Jett Taylor (Cathedral Catholic and Del Mar). Axline and Taylor are two of the best sophomores in the country. LH attacker Eamon Bruhn (Cathedral Catholic Class of 2027 and Del Mar), 2nd team California/Hawaii All-American in 2024; and LH utility player Dexter Black (La Jolla Class of 2027 and La Jolla United) didn’t try out for the team. PSW would be a top 3 or 4 team with Bruhn and Black.
  6. CEN. One of the older teams in the tournament, with eight Class of 2025 players and two Class of 2027 players. Goalie Harper Gardener (Rio Americano Class of 2025 and American River, UCLA) was a 1st team California/Hawaii All-American in 2024. Lucas Ruano (Rio Americano Class of 2026 and American River, “Big 4”?) is one of the best juniors in the country. CEN could finish anywhere from 6th to 8th.
  7. SPA Blue. Two Class of 2025 players, two Class of 2027 players, and one Class of 2028 player: Sean Anderson (JSerra and Mission). As noted above, I don’t think there is much separation between the PAC Red and PAC Blue teams. There is more separation between the SPA Red and SPA Blue teams. SPA Blue could finish anywhere from 6th through 8th.
  8. NEZ. One of the two youngest teams in my top 8, with no Class of 2025 players, four Class of 2027 players, and one Class of 2028 player. Seven of NEZ’s top 9 or 10 players play for Greenwich Aquatics and will play for Brunswick in the fall, including goalie Jack Lindberg, attacker/center defender Callum Walker, LH center Peter Saunders (Class of 2027), utility player Neveh Yechiely, and Jackson Shaw (Class of 2028). Shaw is one of the best freshmen in the country. James Faulhaber (Phillips Exeter Class of 2026 and LA Premier) is a solid center. NEZ could finish anywhere from 6th through 8th.

Re PSW, the standout CCHS/Del Mar Center Defender is Jett Taylor (whose younger brother is Grayson Taylor, also CCHS/Del Mar).

It was probably an accident which has been corrected. The Public Rosters file available on the USA Water Polo site does not have the DOB information anymore, which is understandable. Interestingly, it does not have the graduation year info as well.

I’m good with that. For my part, any posted tables or charts I derive from DOB information will be in the form of aggregated information only. I have to follow similar guidelines when creating data products subject to the California Public Records Act.
