I watched most of the games this weekend, Seemed to be a bit of both. UCD looked pensive and repeatedly unlucky with the post in that game.
SJSU - had excellent goal keeping, though a bit corny with their exuberant celebrations of basic blocks. Multiple key players taped up and limping. Coach works hard to rest their main subs and swap them in quickly. After that the bench is pretty mid (judged by their close play vs the JuCos that were there).
Two reasons for the Fordham-Princeton disparity of home and away. First, Fordham’s pool is shallow-deep and, as a result, they don’t host much at home. Princeton hosts a pretty massive home tournament every year that Fordham has attended in the past. And second, they are not in the same “conference” even though their two “conferences” play a single-game for an NCAA spot at the end of the year. That means any regular season match-up occurs at a tournament or is a scheduled non-conference game. They are far and away the best two programs on the east coast at the moment, and have been for about 5 years. But I wouldn’t put too much stock in the regular season tie. We will definitely see them face off again for the CWPA tournament bid.
Sbwp, as of last year, the NCAA tournament has expanded and Prinfeton and Fordham no longer play each other at the end of the season to “officially” make it to the tournament. This happened in 2021 and 2022, but in 2023 both Princeton and Fordham made it. Princeton was the No.4 seed and Fordham was the No.7 seed, losing to Cal in the quarterfinals.
Here are my predictions for this weekend’s MPSF Invite:
UCLA. I don’t think UCLA will go undefeated this year but, unless several of their top players sustain injuries, they will probably be favored in every game. After Ryder Dodd, transfer center defenders Nico Tierney (Pepperdine) and Aaron Voggenthaler (U.C. Davis) are leading the team in scoring. It helps to have center defenders who can score.
USC. After roughly the first quarter of the season, USC might be the second-best team in the country, with excellent chemistry, balanced scoring, and a strong defense. Transfer Robert Lopez Duart (LBSU) is leading the team in scoring.
Stanford. Contrary to my earlier prediction, it appears that West Temkin and Griffen Price will not share time at goalie. Temkin has started all of the games Stanford has played against better teams. Riley Pittman, one of the most underrated players in the country, has 12 goals and 11 assists in 6 games. Sacred Heart graduate Gavin West is receiving more playing time than I expected.
Cal. It’s early but one has to wonder about Cal’s defense.
Princeton. Mason Killion, perhaps Princeton’s best defensive player, missed the first 6 games of the season and is still not 100 percent. Princeton will be a better team when Killion has fully recovered from his injury.
LBSU. LBSU is a solid team, giving Stanford a good game last Sunday. Spanish center Gabi Acosta, who missed the team’s first 5 games, has scored 9 goals in three games. Freshman center Corbin Stanley is LBSU’s leading scorer with 16 goals. Spanish attacker Marc Frigola is the second-leading scorer with 13 goals. It looks like Liam Ward and UC. Davis transfer Aaron Wilson are sharing time at goalie.
UCSD
U.C. Davis. This appears to be one of the weaker U.C. Davis teams in recent years. It doesn’t help that Aaron Voggenthaler and Aaron Wilson elected to use their final year of eligibility at other colleges.
GW plays SJ today at 11.
This weekend at the WCC-BIG West challenge LMU play UCI, UOP and UCSB after losing to Pepperdine by 3 last weekend (down 2 with one min to go). looking forward to the UOP V UCI game at LMU. Looks like LMU is only streaming their games on ESPN+. Must be a licensing or cost thing.
strange, there appears to be a game on the FOSH right now between USC and Concordia? The game is not on either of their schedules, maybe it is an exhibition. looks like Nemo is in the cage for USC. 10-4 after 3.
