What is Academy ODP?

Then, during ODP National Championships, USA staff watches the kids and makes the selections for the NTSC, the camp everyone pays 2000 dollars to attend and gets further evaluated.

I mean who chooses who is selected for holiday camp

I do. I’ll PM you my venmo information.

“This does not guarantee your spot at the camp. It is just letting us know you are interested. Then, our High-Performance Staff will make selections and send invitations to selected coaches to attend the 2024 Holiday Camp. Only book your flights once the section email is sent out.”

Since the “high performance staff” knows all of the 8th graders so well, they chose. Sorry I have no clue. I think everyone gets chosen unless too many apply, The coaches list them in order on the nomination form so, they probably knock the bottom names off as needed.

I think participation in ODP and JO’s plays a part in who gets selected for Holiday camp.

I had 2 kids attend the Holiday camp. The process was: tell your Club coach you are interested, he puts your name in, you pay the fee. There were plenty of spots available.
Both kids had a great experience. I do wonder if large West Coast teams get more love?

I will say my one kid connected with a guest D1 coach there and ended up being recruited by that coach later. You never know where that connection will come from when it comes to college recruitment.

I’ve heard that Academy invites went out this week.

Is this only for cadet and youth?

I believe so. I don’t think there is development academy. That’s a little counter to the idea of working with players who have been in the system a while.

Is there any good reason this is all so hush hush? Why not publish the list like for zone teams, NTSC, National Teams?

The secrecy only fuels theories about politics, nepotism, and even corruption.

I believe (though I could be wrong) that the selection criteria are based on previous year’s NTSC selections. In past years, I noticed that a few players who were not selected for the NTSC or participated in ODP received invitations. The number was very small, and these were exceptional players who later went on to join the National Team.

Because the Academy kids have a near-guaranteed spot for the NTSC. So the Academy team undercuts the “ODP regional camps are how we select the National Team” narrative as well as the “you have to go to ODP Champs to make the National team”
Now stop asking questions and fork over $200 for one day of training.

Clearest summary yet! This is why the struggle to get kids to show up for the youth division. They have to beg the kids who are just shy of the NTSC bar to play or they don’t get enough to fill teams. Most say no after being passed over the past 3 years.

Academy is not a once a year thing like NTSC. The frequency they get together is at minimum, monthly and sometimes bi-weekly if they are training for an international tournament. The invite list is also ongoing, so anyone can get an invite at any time in the year. This is why you will never see a list published.

Most athletes in Academy have gone through ODP at some point. We’ve seen Academy players not get invited to NTSC, so it’s not automatic.

We’ve also witnessed players enter ODP for the first time as a Youth player and make a strong enough impression to get invited to Academy. So it’s never too late to participate, especially if you are position player.

We have observed that majority of the players who get rostered for international teams have been in the pipeline since day one. So the sooner you get into ODP, the better.

That’s a good start. Transparency will help as many people have been frustrated with the process and as a result the selections over the years.
