Water Polo Wednesday - All things elite water polo

With voting open 2 weeks before the season starts, wouldn’t this become a popularity contest? If we want the awards to have merit and to judge a player’s performance over the course of the entire season, voting should remain closed until at least early November. Be open for a week in November to narrow down the pool. Following the end of the regular season, the public should narrow down the list once again, and your “expert panel” can vote once the season ends. Just confused how having voting open right now makes any sense.

Perhaps set up a “Mercury Watch” list? And from the watch list cull down to a short list for voting? In any event, I love the idea.

I do agree, any vote before the season starts is just popularity. I would think starting the voting after weekend 2 of the seasons would give fans a chance to see the new class, the guys who worked hard in the off season and now are ready to blow up.

Completely agree with this take. I even saw a player listed that hasn’t even played an NCAA gsme.

I missed the announcements about these “awards”. Where do I find the description? As it in an episode? The criteria/explanation should be listed on the form as well.

Maybe think of it as a prediction market. #kalshee #polymarket .

Scroll up to see announcement or follow wpw on youtube.

If they want to do this thing right, they need to not make the same mistakes that USA WP makes with the Cutino Award watch list, which at times has not even had one of the eventual finalists for the award.

My suggestion would be to do the initial voting at the end of regular-season conference play and give everyone two weeks until the conference tournament to narrow down the pool. After conference tournaments, there should be another round of voting to further narrow down the pool, and following the NCAAs, the so-called “expert panel” can choose the finalists.

Hi all. THANK YOU for the feedback and engagement. Like we said, first pancake!
Couple of notes

  1. We opened voting today because we’ve been getting pinged quite a bit about the excitement for this. Remember, you get 3 votes per round. How you use them is up to you. We will certainly consider these changes for next season!!!
  2. Yes, these are actual awards. You can see our announcement in our first episode this season or on the Laacwaterpolo.com/mercuryawards
  3. The expert panel is legit. Don’t worry, announcement later this season will make you proud.

I’m not doubting your expert panel, but putting it in quotes until it is revealed.

Opening voting for an end-of-season award before some teams have even begun practicing, and 15 days before any official competition, is premature. Doing it just because you’re getting pinged about “excitement” isn’t a good enough reason to short-circuit a process that’s supposed to reflect the actual season. I’m disappointed this went out now. This should wait until teams have actually had a chance to compete. If you want the awards to have merit in the community, they need to be based on what actually happens in the water and not on how many messages you got before the season even started.

bringing this back to top of thread so people have it

Anyone who votes right now is either basing it off last season or they’re biased and it becomes a popularity contest. You guys should be willing to make changes based off feedback you’re receiving, especially since you’re always asking for it

Totally agree. This is why the Cutino watch list is awful when it comes out

Agree, it is a silly list.

I see the Davis and San Jose season previews are under members only. Will those videos come out to the public at some point?

SJSU becomes public today, Davis tomorrow. Members get early access to all content plus our statistic sheets and discounted victory ball and mercury award tickets.

The last few coaches are joining this week as we wrap up our season preview.
We couldn’t leave out St Mary’s, the newest NCAA D1 program on the west coast since 2015 (SJSU).
Its a GREAT interview with Coach Lathrop as he not only assembles his class but builds the culture at St Mary’s College. A season to remember for the Gaels all starts right HERE on WPW

Maybe I’m reading the post wrong, but both LIU and Mount St. Mary’s started after 2015. I might be missing other programs.

You’re correct, meant to write west coast.
