I know that Miramonte lost to Las Lomas and, say, Monte Vista has some very good players. Still, realistically, there are four NCS teams that belong to the Open Division (Carondelet, Campo, Acalanes, and Miramonte).
Update: Shame on me, I completely forgot about SRV It should be six teams then.
I think both Mitty and St Francis will be in CCS open. Their seedings may flip as a result of this game. Mitty has been solid all year so do you punish a team for one game seeding wise?
agree re: Mitty in CIF-CCS Open regardless. last year, WCAL got 4 teams in Open. So let’s say 3 for WCAL this season with St. Francis’ victory: SHP, St. Francis and Mitty.
Rest of 8 team CIF-CCS Open Bracket:
For sure - Leland, Soquel. That makes 5.
Stevenson (went 1-1 vs St. Francis) finished first in their league. Are they going to play Open again this year? That would make 6.
Palo Alto vs. Los Altos tomorrow for their league champ. Like Mitty, Palo Alto should still be in Open regardless of result tomorrow. That would make 7. Los Altos is 0-1 vs. St. Francis, but they have had a strong year and are 1-1 vs. Palo Alto.
Soquel vs. Aptos playing tomorrow too. Aptos has had a strong year as well and went 1-1 vs. St. Francis.
Do Los Altos and Aptos have a case for Open bracket?
If Los Altos beats Paly again then I believe they are open. Stevenson beat both SI and Saint Francis and Aptos but losing to Menlo twice hurts them but I can see them being included. I can also see Menlo making it because they beat Stevenson twice, Saint Francis, and Los Altos. But honestly, does anybody really want to be the 8th seed?
They would’ve been D2 if not in open. I’m sure they rather trade with SI but if you line them up they probably are the 8th best team. The committee appeared to seed based on body of work and consistency vs one big win. I am very intrigued by a SHP vs Leland possible finals. .
Notes: Last year, NorCal put all four NCS Open teams in D1. Any scenario they put SRV and Davis here instead of Miramonte and Leland? Both are very deserving to be in this bracket. And SRV won NorCal D2 last year. Davis put on a clinic yesterday against Granite Bay. Miramonte has a 2-1 edge vs Davis. And Leland beat Davis in OT at Arroyo Grande tournament. But the way Davis is playing right now…
Regarding SJS: It has been a challenging season for better SJS teams, with Davis and GB dealing with multiple injuries. Davis’ arguably the best player missed most of October and November, including the Norcal Invite and CIF finals. GB’s two best players missed some time in October, but luckily came back for the playoffs. In terms of CIF outcome, it has been a return to normalcy from last year’s anomaly. Last fall, a super young Davis team, starting all sophomores and freshmen, lost to a very good GB team - half of that young Davis team was sick right before the finals, afaik. Before 2024, the last time Davis lost CIF was 2015, when they also had a youngish team. With Davis keeping all rotation players, they should be a top five team in Norcal next year.
P.S. It is great that Tyson Frenn has built a solid program at Granite Bay. The section urgently needs more of these examples- as of now, most section teams are weak and not competitive outside SJS. It is sad to see St. Francis (Sac) program falling off the cliff over the last 6–7 years. Merced is doing well now, both on the boys and girls side, but I am not completely sure that it will be sustained when coaches’ kids graduate. Rio Americano is a decent program, but, surprisingly, they have not benefited much from St. Francis’ decay and American River club is pretty weak on the girls side. St. Mary’s is led by talented Biedermann sisters, but once they graduate the team might go down a notch…
