SS Open Division

Not according to the reported schedule from CIFSS: Schedules & Scores - CIF Southern Section

Newport is far and away the best team.

Ratings that were shown at the end of the season. I’m sure there are ways to improve ratings accuracy but it’s the one objective measure that is not open to bias. I think it’s telling that the committee did not see a reason to make any changes, those individuals are closer to the teams and schedules and have a responsibility to ensure there’s fairness in the process.

SixOnFive, you mention that the committee didn’t see reason to make any changes. I was told that the commissioner (responsible for water polo) seeded according to the rankings list and that the 16-member Advisory Committee was not advised. Loyola should have been in the top 8. Laguna had no business being there. Go through each team’s quality wins and losses and then watch the teams play and it makes you question the means and methods of the underlying Massey Ratings.
I also would have had Santa Margarita at the 4 or 5 spot. Just one person’s opinion.

cmbreeze is correct – Newport Harbor and Mira Costa have not played each other yet this year.

Here’s something interesting, though: This is the first time in 48 years that the two schools have faced each other in the playoffs. Here are the prior playoff encounters (all played at the premier level for those years):
1977. Final, Newport Harbor 7, Mira Costa 6.
1976. Semi-Final, Newport Harbor 16, Mira Costa 7.
1973. Quarter-Final, Mira Costa 8, Newport Harbor 6.

So Loyola should be D1 champs! Could be the second title in 3 years

do we have the game times for Wednesday? Also, are all the other division semifinals being played at Woolett?

I’m happy to see that Open has 2 LA and 2 OC teams. Also, D1 has 2 LA, 1 OC and 1 Santa Barbara team. Southern California can use some parity.

and the Open semis has 3 public schools.

Will any of this be streamed? If so, where?

NFHS (CIF’s Streaming Partner) is only broadcasting the Championship games, not the semis.

Once again, a major miss by CIF. To make it worse, even if NFHS has chosen to not broadcast the games, CIF requires an onerous contract and the payment of “Rights Fees” even for an individual participating school’s video/broadcasting club.

You are the high school athletics governing body in the state and you have a particular sport where California is the hotbed nationally, and you choose to not provide a way for people to watch.

But hey, you’ll broadcast Leon vs. Lincoln, a boy’s JV soccer game in Tallahasse, FL. on the same day.

NFHS is a joke. I tried to watch a game last week that looked like it was from a security camera that was either knocked askew or was only watching the near wall. Couldn’t see anything. Also, how will we know when to tune in with no schedule posted?

I hope Leon crushes Lincoln. They deserve it.

That’s brutal .Maybe some parents of the teams will be broadcasting to Youtube and can post a link here if so.

They would be violating the rules and subjecting their schools to punishment.

If there is some ticket purchase rule about not broadcasting then I assume that is correct. Maybe a fan with no affiliation to either school could do it then. Ha.

FYI Division 1 semifinals at Woollett times are posted on CIF website: Mater Dei-HW at 3pm (updated time). Loyola-Dos Pueblos 6pm.

CIF SS Semis (Open Division and D1) will be live streamed on NFHS. $13.99 for the month, so you can live stream the Championship game as well.

Predictions:

Open Division -

Newport 11 - Mira Costa 7

Corona del Mar 10 - Oaks 8

Division 1 -

Harvard Westlake 8 - MD 7

Loyola 10 - Dos Pueblos 8

Corona del Mar will be trying to repeat something that happened in 2023. Two years ago, Corona del Mar lost to Oaks Christian on their way up to the Santa Barbara Invitational, which they won. Then, they defeated Oaks Christian in their second meeting, in the Open Division quarter-finals.

This year, Corona del Mar also lost to Oaks Christian on their way up to the Santa Barbara Invitational. That game took place on Thurs., Sept. 4, Oaks Christian winning, 13-11. Corona del Mar won the S.B.I. over the next two days. Now, they are trying to defeat Oaks Christian in their second encounter, in today’s Open Division semi-finals.
