Wow. Saint Mary’s just secured one of the best young players in the world! Wow!

21 year old freshmen. Born Feb 1 2005 would mean he has 3 years of eligibility (if my math is correct) if the new 5 for 5 plan is approved. Great pick up for sure, cant wait to watch him play, should have a strong immediate impact.

Damn. Lathrop is not messing around.

And here I was thinking that all Spaniards were supposed to play at Cal.

What’s the prospect report for Aguirre?

H20polo10,

As players and coaches sometimes say when discussing really good players, Oier Aguirre Rubio is “legit.” Not to be confused with his older brother, Unai Aguirre Rubio (considered by many to be the best goalie in the world), Oier is a RH attacker with speed and plays well on both ends of the pool. As one of Spain’s top junior players, it’s no surprise that he is an excellent perimeter shooter. (A possible topic for another thread: Why has Spain produced so many great shooters?) It seems safe to say that no college goalie will present a greater challenge to Oier than trying to score against his own brother.

Oier was the leading scorer on the Spanish team that won the gold medal at the 2025 20U World Championships. Oier and his Spanish teammate, Cal goalie Aran Pina, were named to the 7-man all-tournament team. So were Ryder Dodd and Pacific’s outstanding freshman, Apostolos Georgaras from Greece.

I’m excited to see the debut season for this team. I think it will be very successful for a first season. Somewhere around Santa Clara’s level last year.

Better than Santa Clara.

That would be impressive but would put them knocking at the top 10 in year 1. I’d temper your expectations
