Executive order aims to limit NCAA athletes to 5 years, 1 transfer - ESPN
Finally, someone is doing something about this craziness and hope it gets some traction and gets implemented sooner rather than later![]()
Weii, it’s a start. Unfortunately and executive order on it’s own, means as much as our opinion on this chat group.
NCAA and Congress have to sit down and talk this through and come to a good bipartisan agreement of what is right and what is fair in college sports and hopefully go back to what college sports is supposed to be about.
With all the money involved in football however, I think it’s going to be a really tough battle in court now that all this money was ‘released’ to certain college sports. It’s going to be hard to reign this in.
I truly agree that there should be a limit on amount of years to complete your eligibility and how many times you can transfer, but we all know how that’s going to go in court.
NCAA is accepting athletes in certain sports now, (basketball, hockey, waterpolo) that have already played in lower tier professional leagues???
They need to add an age limit to this also
One of the most important parts of this executive order suggestion, again not really enforceable on it’s own, is that women’s, or Olympic sports, should not be able to get cut, for the sole purpose of saving money for the athletic departments. This is a big one right here. If sports start getting cut to save money, which it would save money for the school, it will be hard to bring them back, regardless of future NCAA agreements
Just off the cuff, if we are going to allow college athletes to be treated as professionals and be paid, why bother with rules about elgibility? At least in major revenue sports, calling these players “student-athletes” is a farce. Why bother with the pretense? There is not doubt that colleges have exploited athletes in football, basketball, and perhaps a few other sports to play in what are functionally professional leagues that earn the host institutions (and many other parties) large revenues. Compensation for these athletes is long overdue. But applying that fix to non-revenue sports like water polo does not seem appropriate, and I think perverts the original purpose of athletics as part of a college education.
