2025 Preliminary Allocations before update
Does anyone know which zones, after SoPac and Pacific, are the next largest (based on participants)? I think itâs Coastal then PSW, but I could be off and I am not 100% certain that PSW is larger than Central.
For girls, it is PAC, CCA, SOPAC, CEN, and PSW, in this order.
The invite used to be one of the parts to JOs.
I believe they pulled it around Covid and the start of session 3.
It looks like USAWP started the expansion process last year with the increase in 12u boys teams.
The way itâs setup now isnât too bad. You can try and qual for session 1 or 2. If you donât make it then you can do session 3.
They arenât allocating spots based on number of teams.
| 18 Boys | 16 Boys | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quals | Championship | Total | Quals | Championship | Total | ||
| SPA | 22 | 8 | 23 | 23 | 7 | 18 | |
| CCA | 22 | 5 | 16 | 28 | 6 | 17 | |
| PSW | 9 | 3 | 10 | 16 | 4 | 11 | |
| NEZ | 7 | 3 | 6 | 10 | 3 | 9 |
I think the allocation is based on the number of players registered with USA Water Polo, no?
Yes,
If thereâs 5000 18u boys in USAWP, and SoPac has 500, then SoPac gets 10% of the allocations at JOs
⌠but every zone gets 2 automatic spots in JOs⌠so that complicates a âstraightâ distribution
Iâd like to see the numbers. I find it hard to believe there are 50% more registered 18Us in Orange County than in CCA while having the same number of teams. Especially since several SPA teams get LA commuters Vanguard, SOCAL, at least.
Hard to understand MDW getting 5 championship teams and PSW 3 and CCA 5.
I donât think it is - as a sport we are becoming more âelististâ
10+ years ago, on the girls side, Newport, Mater Dei, and CDM (the closed clubs that served one HS) were lucky to finish 6th at SoPac JO quals. O-Lu didnât have a club team. Now those clubs dominate - we have seen a takeover of the top spots by the closed clubs. With more and more closed clubs, it boxes out the kids that attend schools where everyone on varsity doesnât play club - the result - these âorphansâ quit club and just play HS⌠so yes, it does make sense that SoPac, Coastal, and PSW are seeing declining club participation numbers.
It seems more and more CLUBS are the year round program like most have said , which is both good and bad - but i do agree it is boxing alot of kids in.
I still donât get MDW getting 5 spots. Look at other non CA zones so you donât miss the forest for the trees worrying about closed club history. Maybe the zone is too large of a geographical area and skewed.
I agree the closed club model hasnât really expanded to NorCal, seems to be more SoCal centric.
But using the singular JOs champion is a very slim way to measure the prevalence of closed vs. open clubs. Looking at the most recent line-up for girls 18s Futures SF with teams out of SoCal, 4 of the top-6 are closed clubs:
#1 - Set - open
#2 - Regency - closed
#4 - Legacy - closed
#6 - SB 805 - open
#8 - Newport - closed
#10 - Arroyo Grande - closed
#12 - SD Shores - open
#14 - Seaside - open? Carlsbad?
#16 - Long Beach - open? Wilson?
If we restrict the list to just SoPac, itâs 3 out of 4 ⌠anyways, this is just my theory, that a rising number of closed clubs creates club âorphansâ that donât have as many options as in the past so they drop out of club play all together.
Anyone have the Pacific Schedule? For both young and older
Legacy is an Open Club. They have a 16U and 18U girls team this year. While itâs the goto club for OLU Highschool, they have had players from other schools last year and also this year. Itâs also not mandatory that OLU Girls play @ Legacy.
This year all the OLU Seniors are @ Legacy. They have not played full strength yet in this club season, as a parent whoâs had multiple kids on different school and many club programs over the years, itâs refreshing to see a program that allows balance and time to reduce burnout and promote healing.
Expect to see them in the Semiâs at the upcoming tournaments at in 16U & 18U.

Kudos to the people who did the seeding for CCA 12u boys. It looks like everyone finished within 2 spots of their seed.
