Torrey Pines over Westview 12-9
Was at the Newp/Mira Costa game. Mira Costa plays a good brand of offense and some solid defense and had the lead at 3-2 at one point. Newport’s depth’, talent and especially thier counter was the difference here. Battle of the bay final it appears to be.
I saw a post by the LA Times writer, Matt Szabo, who stated that the last Newport - CDM CIF Final meet up was back in 1987. Is that right @Waterpolohistory?
Yes, that is correct. 1987 is the last time they have met in a championship final – CDM won that match. They have also met in four other finals – in 1969 (CDM won), 1974 (CDM), 1982 (CDM) and 1984 (Newport Harbor).
For all playoff games, all rounds, they have a 5-5 record from 1969 to 2024 – so this is a “rubber match.” (This is “in-pool” results – the 2009 playoff match won by Newport Harbor was declared forfeited to CDM the following year.)
Interestingly, this is the 99th renewal of their great rivalry. They have been playing each other since 1964 – when Ted Newland coached CDM and Jack Fullerton (later of Orange Coast College) coached NHHS. Newport Harbor has a lead in the series of 59-39 (“in-pool” results; 56-42 factoring three forfeits in 2009).
It seems entirely possible now that Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar could meet again in the SoCal Regional next week, which would make an even 100 engagements all-time. But, that’s getting ahead of ourselves!
What happened in 09 that Newport forfeited to CDM?
It was determined in 2010 that Newport Harbor had an ineligible player on its 2009 roster, necessitating the forfeit of all of their wins that year except one.
Let’s not overlook the CIF-Los Angeles City Section finals, which took place last night at Los Angeles Valley College. The results were:
Open Division: Cleveland 9, Eagle Rock 4. (Cleveland coach: Sean Sniderman.)
Division 1: Palisades 8, Granda Hills Charter 7. (Palisades coach: Theo Trask.)
I’m especially happy for Palisades HS. I believe their school was shut down due to the fire. What a sweet victory for them.
NCS Final Cross town rivals Campo v Miramonte, Saturday at 3 pm at Soda Center. Another NCS Championship for the ages. Instant classic.

Good for them. I would have liked to see them in open. Schedule tough opponents and get better. The computer should be smart enough to realize this.

Torrey made a great comeback from down 5-2 at half.
La Jolla and Cathedral tied at 4 after the first quarter.
Tied 6-6 at half. Really exciting game.
Cathedral up 10-8 after 3.
:28 second to go. Timeout cathedral. La Jolla up 13-12!
What an epic game! La Jolla wins 13-12! Congratulations Coach Tom Atwell and the La Jolla team!
Kiefer’s little brother is fun to watch. Congrats to La Jolla!
Great win for Torrey Pines as well. I heard their pool is opening soon. I’m excited for their program.
