Here’s a rundown on today’s Division 1 SoCal Regional final match:

Game Summary: Cathedral Catholic scored the first goal at the 5:49 mark of the first quarter. Newport Harbor tied it and went ahead 2-1 at the 3:42 mark. This was the first and only lead change of the game. CC tied it at 2-2 at 2:03 left in the first. NH went ahead to stay at the 1:40 mark, making it 3-2 – then 4-2 by the end of the first quarter. From there, NH built a four goal lead, 7-3, at the 4:19 mark of the second quarter. But, CC narrowed the lead to 7-5 at halftime, and in the third quarter they got to within one goal four different times – finally making it 10-9 with just 0:03 left in the third. NH came out strong, however, at the beginning of the fourth – building their second four-goal lead, 13-9, with 5:25 left in the game. CC clawed back to within one goal once again to make it 13-12 with 2:14 left. However, they could not score further, and NH scored an empty net goal with 0:11 left to make the final score, 14-12.
Level of Play: This game seemed to me a bit different from previous regional final matches. Both teams seemed to be playing really hard, especially CC. Their bench and their fans were boisterous – NH is simply the better team and they met the challenge. NH beat CC five out of six meetings this year. Interestingly, though, NH had 12 games this year where the point spread was five goals or less. Six of those game – half of them – were played against CC (including the one game they lost). In addition, the 12 goals NH surrendered today is the second highest given up all year – CC scored 13 against them in another loss, back in the finals of the Elite 8 tourney.
A Personal Note: During halftime and into the third quarter a spectacular rainbow arched over the sky and the partial clouds made for a dramatic sunset. Living in Southern California is great! Two fantastic prep water polo teams putting on an amazing show, the fall weather was wonderful and what a facility Mt. SAC has! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
