Darcy Spark SJSU to UCLA

Look who is going to UCLA :slightly_smiling_face: There were some people shading on her stats because apparently, a lot of her goals came against lesser opponents. Well, she’s going to show you now, how she does when playing on a top 4 team :collision:

Hawaii is quickly becoming a farm system for UCLA

If I had a nickel for every Hawaii Big West Player of the Year that transferred to UCLA, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Rita Gurri from Long Beach is also transferring to UCLA

Question - is UCLA going with 24 player roster limit for 2026-2027?

Do that 13 more times, and you can buy a postage stamp.

Correct and this will never change. As much as I’d love to see who is in the portal, it is none of my business

So the 24 player limit is only currently impacted by the class of 2026. The rest of the previous years recruits are all grandfathered in under the rules that were modified due to the House settlement.

Basically, teams will be able to have as many players as they want until the players from the Class of 2025 graduate.

I think for the most part we will see teams try to stay close to 24 with some flexibility for transfers for the next 3 seasons before they absolutely have to be at 24.

I still don’t think that’s an accurate interpretation of the House rules.

My understanding is:

  • The 24-player cap still exists
  • Some athletes may be grandfathered during the transition
  • But that doesn’t mean unlimited rosters until the Class of 2025 graduates

There’s a difference between temporary flexibility and “as many players as they want.”

Happy to be corrected if I’m misunderstanding the actual language.

I don’t think the public knows how many or which players were given DSA status. Only those athletes don’t count toward the 24 player limit. Theoretically, a team could have unlimited DSAs.
Another case of our curiosity not being satisfied by players’ privacy.

Correct I’m generalizing because for example - UCLA has 21 potential returning athletes on the women’s side that could all be grandfathered in under the House settlement or “given DSA status”.

This effectively means that they still have 24 open roster spots. The 3 transfers likely also have DSA status they keep when they transfer (not that it matters a lot case they will all graduate before roster limits get more serious).

That leaves them with 22 (they recruited 2 athletes in 2026 according to WPE spreadsheet) available spots to recruit a lot of players over the next 3 years which is why they already have a large 2027 class of recruits. It will likely not impact 2028 recruiting either but may have an impact on class of 2029 when they really have to start thinking about it more. Hence, when the grandfathered class of 2025 is finishing up (note that class might have a 5th year of eligibility too).

Then a player in some sport will sue the NCAA, saying that the roster limits in their sport, is keeping him/her from making a living and we will have some ruling that the roster limits should not be able to be enforced.

Indeed. However, she scored 30 goals v top 4 teams at SJSU. They are in the MPSF too so their schedule would have been similar to any of the MPSF teams. Same amount of goals as Ausmus but Spark’s count did not include NCAA championship. This was just her regular season count. Quin had 26 goals out of her total.

Do we know who else is in the portal?

Ari Temprano from Hawaii will be joining Aggie Weston at UCLA.

She will also be joining Spanish teammate Rita Gurri who transferred from Long Beach State to UCLA.

and in the nicest way I can say this… UCI will not have a lot of excuses for losing Big West next year with the two teams ahead of them losing heavy hitters

Chiara Amoroso from Long Beach to Cal

I stand by UCI having no excuse to make it back in Big West final with the teams ahead of them losing their biggest hitters

Ari Karampetsu from Michigan to USC

Ari will still be a lethal shooter for the Trojans on the Right Side. She was someone you couldn’t let out of your sight with her shot.

So far

4 to UCLA (all international)

1 to USC (international)

1 to Cal (domestic)

Unusual by historical standards?
