Great job on the interviews, but what is the deal with no live scoring for these games? Seems like the most prestigious academic university 15 minutes from Apple headquarters can figure out how to get an iPad at each desk to use 6-8? Posting a paper book after the game is ridiculous.
Thanks @WPWednesday . You all have done a great job with the diversity of interviews this season. I was referring to the @GameOnLiveStudio live interviews throughout the tournament on IG. There have been 5 segments and all are the usual suspects.
So it looks like 8 out of 8 interviews were all with Big 4 coaches and 1 player. While clearly those teams run water polo for obvious reasons, we need more focus outside of those teams. Even if it is the MPSF invite, 75% of participants came outside of the MPSF.
Can we get a petition or something going to get Wes and Breck on more games? It was awesome! It was like having Joe Buck and Troy Aikman commentate a water polo game! Love what they are doing! Keep it up guys!
GREAT interview with Coach Ushe of UCSD. In person and so grateful for the opportunity to spend the time and speak with him
Enjoy the Interview
When are you going to interview Ross Sinclair, the best high school coach in the nation?
Is this week episode released today or tommorow?
I know this is a question for WPW, but iIMHO it appears as though they focus mostly on NCAA mens and National League with some coverage on woman’s NCAA. Expecting more than that is tough and not sure there is not enough time to go around to support other areas. It would be awesome if there was another person / pair to cover those in the same style however. I like the focus and expertise currently and think it would be tough to have the level of detail if they alone started covering other areas.
I don’t disagree with you about all teams uploading their stats. I would love for every team to have all their stats published.
However, I can also assure you that the All-American teams are NOT decided by goals. Look no further than Chase Dodd, who had fewer goals than teammate Ben Liechty, but was a first-team All-American. Also look no further than Di Martire’s first-team All-American selection over teammate Botond Balogh. Despite all the casuals always pointing to Balogh as Stanford’s “guy” last year, G.P. was the difference-maker on last year’s team. Most of the time, the All-American teams are a fairly accurate representation of the season and are chosen by coaches nationwide, 90% of whom know more about the sport, the teams, and the players than we do.
Do I agree with having stats? Yes. But I think your point about goals being the primary criteria is mistaken.
And if we are so caught up in stats and judging players accurately, I’ll bring up this point for what is now the third time in hopes of getting a response. You opened up voting for your Mercury Awards the second the season started and turned it into a popularity contest. So it is hard to listen to you talk about people not getting recognized when the LAAC Victory Ball and WPW refused to take feedback from the community regarding the timing of the awards. There are people listed in the wrong positions on the Google Form, people who are not NCAA-eligible this season, goalies who have yet to play a meaningful game, and players who have been injured for a majority of the season. The absolute earliest the voting should have begun, in my opinion, is October 5th, and by then you could’ve had a more accurate Google Form of players in contention, and teams would’ve started conference play and played about half their total games for the season.
Better better never best! The good news is that the number of votes received before the first game make up fewer than 5% of the total votes. Are there players who haven’t played? Yes. They’ll be removed in the second round of course. Voting for round two will open up October 15th so be on the lookout for an updated list! Thanks for all the support!!!
Its another unhinged and somewhat delirious episode of WPW. We break down the Fordham trip, positional changes for Diego Tresa and the upcoming conference matchups in MPSF and others.
Enjoy the Show
And remember, last couple of days to vote for Mercury Awards
Round 1 Voting Closes EOD September 30th! Rd 2 opens up October 15th!
Victory Ball and Mercury Awards Ceremony are SOLD OUT. Join the WAITLIST
Wow. Rough effort Clay. Too much reliance on vague stats. Guys, it gets confusing because Tausher didn’t play the 4th against Pepperdine and Fordham scored against some 7-6 missed attempts by UCLA.
Cheers to Hunter Danko. That kid is huge and can shoot. What an anomaly and role model: Non-California, non-Greenwich, non-euro. If his name was Dankovic out of Croatia, he would have had some preseason love. ![]()
Will also add that both Stanford scores were inaccurate and Pacific is not the lone team to play all 4 MPSF schools as UCI and UCSB have as well.
Totally understand that both Wes and Clay are volunteering their time, but I do think we can put in 15 more minutes of effort to fact check scores and stats before hitting record. Tauscher’s should have said 18/27 with a save percentage of 66.7%.
Shout out to Team Vegas!
Great interview with Diego Tresa of Fordham as we talk about their latest road trip, moving from Center to Defender and what its like to now be teammates with people he’s spent his entire life trying to defeat. Enjoy the show!
Diego Tresa Interview
A little late but worth the wait, this episode of Water Polo Wednesday is something else
I dont think the players that made the next round of voting is well representative of the best players. That attacker category went really sideways and I can come up with better names for each category except maybe defender (which is a pretty weak group this year). This is why starting the voting before the season was a mistake. Next year I would not start until after MPSF invite and your expert panel should be able to add 1-2 players per category to make up for mistakes.
Completely agree. There are a number of players that have been killing it this year that were not broadly known before the season started Also odd that he mentioned guys like Eppel - he has been hurt most of the season.
Good episode. To answer the question:
An NCAA championship winning team that did not have the most talent compared to the other teams was UCLA in 2017. I felt like USC had significantly more talent that year with guys like Lachlan/Blake Edwards, Marin Dasic, Grant Stein, Dunstan, and Mcquin Baron.
