I’m not sure I’m seeing all of these incredible restrictions on Newport HS. On the girls’ side they grabbed Emmerson from Mater Dei (arguably a Top 5 player in the 2027 class) and Sunny Brown from Mater Dei and Kennedy Fahey rolled in from Greenwich. I didn’t see a lot of restrictions for those players. Down in San Diego ANYONE can choice into La Jolla HS regardless of where the live so…
Public schools get money for student headcount. When a district like Newport and Irvine are impacted and don’t have enough desks to meet demand, they are closed to outside transfers.
For districts that are not impacted, they will take anyone that can get released by their home district. Some districts are harder to get released from, especially if they are hurting for student enrollment. La Jolla may fit this criteria. Getting released from a public school district doesn’t apply when you are enrolling in a private school.
I believe the two Mater Dei players you referred to are residents of Newport who originally chose to play at MD, but ultimately exercised their right to attend the school in the district they reside in.
The Greenwich player likely had to establish residency in Newport before enrolling. Which again, is an extra hurdle required to play for Newport when it wouldn’t be required for a private school.
In fact, I know of one private school in the Trinity League that doesn’t even require the student to physically attend the school to play. Players can enroll in their online school and just show up for practice and games.
Public and private schools are not on equal playing fields, and that’s why folks on this forum recognize when a public school is successful.
Can anyone name a player Ross wasn’t able to get in because they were closed to outside transfers? Can someone name a single player? Just one?
The residency requirement has been eliminated in the NMUSD. It’s not a wide-open door, but it’s selective.
Transferring into NMUSD without residency is very difficult, see below from NMUSD website.

While there is a process for Inter-District Transfer Requests, as outlined in Board Policy 5117 and Administrative Regulation 5117, Newport-Mesa Unified School District generally approves inter-district attendance permits for students in only three limited circumstances:
-
To allow the student to remain until the natural school break when the student’s parents/guardians have moved out of the district during that year;
-
To consider allowing the student to remain with a class graduating/promoting that year from an elementary, intermediate, or senior high school;
-
To allow a high school senior to attend the same school the student attended as a junior, even if the student’s family moved out of the district during the junior year.

Newport is the Mecca of water polo. There will always be an endless pipeline of talent there. You just have to win or you will lose it to the private schools. Ask Segesman. Players will always gravitate to the flavor of the day
If somebody is trying to transfer out of a public school, to transfer into Newport, most of the time this process would be kept quiet by the player and parents, in case they are not able to transfer. So there could be many of them that were not able to, most people would simply not be aware of it.
If you have lots of money, it becomes much easier, you just need to rent a condo or house in Newport and then it becomes your home school
Yes, I know one. But it’s not appropriate to disclose here.
The transfer discussion is a long and old conversation. I’ve lived it with one of my own with 4 “outsiders” on their team. Nothing changes under the sun.
Back to top high school water polo coaches: Erik Healy of Loyola. A school on the bubble of downtown Los Angeles. Not exactly gonna sell you on location for commuting. However, he has produced year over year, top ranked teams and excellent players. Unknown count of those who have played at the D1 level, and more. And also without any pool space to speak of. I was always impressed with the skill set, fundamentals, and cohesion of his teams. What could he have done in the OC?
I know it’s not a good pool, but don’t they have a pool to practice in on campus? I know they play most of their games off campus. A lot of reasons why Loyola shouldn’t be consistently in the top 10 program. The main one being that it’s nearly impossible to run a closed club program given the geographic diversity of the student body. Because of this, their players have to gel as a team every season. They have pulled a lot of top talent out of Manhattan Beach, which is where his club team is based. I don’t know the overall record, but Mira Costa beat them I think 2 or 3 times this year. It is rare for Mira Costa to get a W against Loyola. Seems like Mira Costa may have kept some of that talent they normally lose to Loyola. Something to watch but he is definitely a top coach
Good questions. I believe an On campus pool, but it’s very squeezed. Maybe some games are played there? Other games at hodgepodge of different places: Mira Costa HS, USC, LMU but I could be wrong. I watched games that were at the pool right next to the Coliseum but that was some time ago.
I think they play some of the easier league games at the home pool. Everything else is off campus
Chucky is awesome - while we did not have kiddos play for him we would have been happy if he was their mentor/coach
Grabbed, Ross doesn’t and cant recruit, he has now money to ofer, also cant deny a transfer.
I dont think he tries to get players in, they transfer and do that on thier own. What is the factual basis of your statement? Do you have personal knowledge or just conjecture and rumour?
grabbed, rolled in? It is a public school and they are under many restictions. I have had 6 kids go through that district. Anyone who qualifies gets in, coaches have 0 say. You sound like sour grapes.
Newport is a public school — The discipline, work ethic, and elite coaching at Newport are among the best — if not the best — in the country.
Ross doesn’t need to recruit. They have plenty of local talent, they always had and always will.
Naturally, top players who want to push themselves to their limits, play with the best - day in and day out and get constant exposure to top college programs will gravitate toward a championship environment, Newport’s success attracts on its own, they don’t need to recruit and there’s no sign of that flow slowing down anytime soon.
Winning is always the best recruiting tool
And coaching kids from all over on team USA overseas trips helps too.
Which helps with the winning part ![]()
