I’ve heard SMC doesn’t have an interest in seriously recruiting internationally (of course, the new coach may persuade them this is not practical). This is an enrollment play. They want to increase attendance from California high schools.
James Lathrop, former Miramonte, Lamorinda, and Junior National Team coach, will be the first coach of the Saint Mary’s men’s water polo program. My prediction: Saint Mary’s will be a top 10 program in 3 or 4 years.
So, IMO the key to recruiting So Cal kids up there is James needs to get them on campus. Most of the kids down here know San Jose, Stanford area and to a certain extent Tri-City because of ODP but they haven’t been in the Walnut Creek area. I can tell you that going to Futures Super Finals this year was eye opening in terms of how beautiful that area is. I think Jeff has thrown down the gauntlet. Time will tell but if I was a betting man I’d say Jeff is right maybe it takes 4-5 years, but I’ll be surprised if this isn’t a really competitive program soon.
