Sacred Heart Prep head coach

Since Jamie Frank left for Menlo last November, who will be SHP girls head coach for 2026/27? Gabi Hernandez is listed as an Assistant Coach…

Here is part of the announcement that was sent to the SHP water polo community last week.

"Please join us in congratulating Gabriel Hernández on his appointment as the new Head Coach of the SHP Girls’ Water Polo program.

"Coach Gaby brings an extraordinary level of international experience, leadership, and championship pedigree to Sacred Heart Prep. Originally from Barcelona, Spain, he enjoyed a legendary playing career with CNAB Barcelona and represented the Spanish National Team at both the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

"Following his playing career, Coach Gaby transitioned into coaching at the highest levels of the sport. He served as Head Coach of the Spanish Men’s National Team, leading the program through the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and also coached with Pro Recco, widely regarded as one of the premier water polo clubs in the world. Most recently, Coach Gaby served as a valued member of the SHP Girls’ Water Polo coaching staff during the 2025 season, where he quickly made a tremendous impact within our program and community.

“We are also thrilled to share that Adriana Reed will return to the pool deck as Assistant Coach for the 2026 season. Following her outstanding tenure as Interim Head Coach in 2025, Adriana guided the Gators to a WCAL Championship, a CCS Open Division Championship, and a No. 2 national ranking. Adriana’s leadership, commitment to our student-athletes, and deep connection to the program were invaluable throughout the season, and we are incredibly excited that she will continue to play such an important role within the future of SHP Girls’ Water Polo.”

Gabi Hernandez is married to Kiley Neushul, one of America’s greatest water polo players.

That is a major coup for Sacred Heart Prep. It’s a strong program that will get much stronger under Hernandez’s leadership.

Just God forbid they ask Gabi to teach PE.

So now what with the team and club

I’m speculating the girls side follows what the boys side did and starts a year round club to compete in Futures, JOs, etc, they just lack the numbers right now. Seems a matter of when, not if.

The boys club “Atherton” will not be competing in Futures, Jo’s, etc. after this summer. Most of them will play for Stanford. Their Assistant Head Coach and JV coach are already coaching for them.

I stand corrected, then. Appreciate the insight.

This seems like big news. So SHP boys won’t have a closed club after this year? Is there a story there? That would be a huge benefit for Stanford club.

Their boys program hasn’t been getting the incoming talent that they usually get every year.

Their 2025 class graduated 10 players, their 2026 class will graduate 9 players, and their current 2027 class has about 8 players in it. Most if not all of these players came in with a ton of club experience.

However, the SHP 2028 class only has about four club players (including their starting goalie this fall), their 2029 class has about three club players, and they’re only getting three club players with this incoming 2030 class (2 should play key/meaningful minutes right away).

It was awesome to see another club on the peninsula compete with Stanford. Perhaps with SHP coaches back at Stanford again this season we will see more talent flow into their program.
