Hello Water Polo Exchange –

My name is Kyle Heise. I’m working with a team to do some research for a potential documentary/docu-series on the history of Olympic water polo in the United States ahead of the LA28 Olympics.

I’m a former player myself for Northgate High School, clubs like Diablo/680, as well as some club years at Chico State.

So far, the story we are researching goes as far back as 1968, the birth of the modern game, into the LA84 Games, into 2000 with the first women’s representation, and into the 2028 Games returning to LA.

We’ve been in contact with alumni from schools like Newport Harbor, CdM, SunnyHills, Commerce as well as the Miramonte x Lamorinda axis in the Bay Area. So far, I’ve been in contact with 30-40 individuals within these circles (including Jeff, the creator of this website).

The two personalities the story is aiming toward so far are Bill Barnett and Sandy Nitta. Part of this story also centers around specific pools (like the NH pool, Commerce’s pool, and others) and the importance of access to 50M pools in talent growth. This is one curious lens we are looking at telling this story.

Now LA28 is coming, and we think it’s an opportune time to explore the history of the sport and help garner interest around these games. Bill Barnett is quoted once as saying the sport wasted the momentum and attention it got from the ‘84 games.

We’re looking for former players and individuals interested in sharing their perspectives on the growth of the sport. This can be small anecdotes to grand experiences like winning JOs or a CIF titles to making an Olympic team. We are curious to learn the sport’s history at large.

If this is something you’d be interested in, feel free to contact me, reply to this thread to drop your own contact, or DM me.
