Exactly. SJSU player reaction was inexcusable. The refs never had control of the game & it reached the boiling point. Very unfortunate. Also a lot of very poor parent behavior. Sad situation all around.
The parents were wild in the video, which is not surprising considering the situation. Chanting “refs you suck”, which was one parent failing to get others to join. Then the guy letting everyone know someone should be ejected. At least three brutalities. Also some guy played since 12 years old.
What a wild scene. Any insight to what transpired throughout the game leading up to this?
Will be interesting to see how the ncaa deals with this. Could have real WCC implications. The way I read the rule could be up to 5 game suspensions for some and 2 games for others.
Flagrant Misconduct: Single physical incident (i.e. elbow, head butt, punch etc.) By NCAA rules, any player committing this foul receives a one-game suspension for the first incident, a two-game suspension for the second incident and a three game suspension in the third incident. By League rules, if the Flagrant Misconduct occurs in a league game, or against a league opponent at an invitational, the player must serve a two game penalty in their next two games AND his/her next two league games (unless the next two games are league games). A second incident by the same player occurring in the same season will be reviewed by the appropriate governance council to determine any additional sanctioning beyond a two game suspension.
Flagrant Misconduct for Fighting: One in which multiple contact is made or intended to make (i.e. punches were thrown, several kicks, etc). By NCAA rules, any player participating in a fight receives a two-game suspension for the first incident, a three-game suspension for the second incident and a season suspension in the third incident. By League rules, any athlete charged with this penalty during a league game, or against a league opponent at an invitational, receives a minimum of a five-game suspension that must be served in their next five games AND his/her next five league games (unless the next five games are league games).
Wow. 5 league games would be the most WCC regular season, except the last one which happens to be the rematch. Nobody has mentioned players involved, but it sounds like there is a very important player in this mix. It will be interesting to see if that impacts the ruling.
Hope this doesn’t jeopardize SM new program or frankly SJSU either. Which team is more at fault? The video is hard to see and then you have that woman screaming in the background
Hard to tell from that video what happened or what started it. Center throws his head back I think? Some retaliation and then some punches above water? A few players leave the bench. What am I missing? A better video would help a bunch.
I’ll say it: SJSU is dirty.
Only one team here has thrown multiple cheap shots in games here.
Here is the link to the live chat for today’s games:
You mean the team with the player who recently pulled the fire alarm in an indoor pool because they were losing a game? That team?
Hard to imagine…
Good win by Stanford, but I’m not convinced it’s Stanford’s year. Despite the wins, I’m seeing some weaknesses: Forer on defense, Herzer on high shots, vulnerability to cross passes, Gheorghe pushed out of games when forced to swim, inconsistent use of C. Ohl and Kaneko. They do have the best defense. I’ll take Mills over Herzer, though. 47% save % and huge 5-meter blocks are propping up the undisciplined USC defense. USC needs a field player to step up and lead. Maybe Nelson.
unfortunately, 2017 women’s season proved this to be false when Ashleigh Johnson won the award despite Maggie Steffens scoring the game winner for Stanford in the NCAA final.
the men’s side hasn’t had this occurrence, but I cannot stress enough that in water polo history, this has an asterisk.
as far as the timing of these polls, the other thing we have to keep in mind is the ACWPC has limited resources to make water polo engaging for people outside the sport. United Soccer Coaches puts out their iteration of the watch list (Herman Trophy), and it’s pretty extensive usually because it’s out early in the season.
There is always room for refinement so that there is legitimacy to the watchlist, but this sport is a small world that the little things like a watchlist to begin with, do matter
Great weekend for Stanford and I’d say varying degrees of bad for the other 3 teams. Cal is in the deepest of holes. USC hasn’t put together a complete game against the top teams. UCLA’s defense was exposed in both games despite the lower score today. They are struggling to keep the ball out of set and got a bit lucky today on several opportunities for the Cal centers that could have gone against them. Stanford is the clear number 1 right now with their offense humming.
9 goals and 8 assists for Dodd this weekend. Still probably not enough to make Wes’ 3 stars of the week
Ryderios Doddopoulos: may next week?
After today’s game, I’m not so sure about your take… Herzer seems to be very steady and consistent.
Was there. Refs did not get control early, play kept escalating. Fighting happened right after SJ player drew an ejection, 3 SMC players initiated hard contact on SJ player, it took off from there. Unfortunate but smart move to end the game. Refs own part of this one.
He had 17 saves vs 27 goals allowed. I wouldn’t say this was his best weekend
I’m curious out of the 4 goalies this weekend who had the best stats? Herzer mills pina or taucher?
Pina had the best stats
In the two games that I watched this weekend, Pina was definitely the best of the four.
