Nice to see that Girls side of Futures is growing. A lot more teams this year.

Looking forward to seeing how the new 16/18u girls teams look out of the shoot. Should be an entertaining weekend of polo.

Most interesting to watch is the inaugural showing from SoCal Patriots united team. They are starting in the death group of SB + Newport right above them in the group (legacy of previous season performance).

Looks like SD Shores 16u is not fielding a jv team, they have 18u A&B squads listed for varsity. I thought they had quite a few 16u girls playing.

Looks like 9 “varsity” teams in Fall Futures have made their way into Division 1 following the first weekend of play.

The usual suspects finished undefeated:

1. Newport
2. Regency
3. Legacy

The remaining spots go to:

1. Santa Barbara A
2. Long Beach Viking (Wilson)
3. CDM
4. Socal Patriots
5. SD Shores
6. Mission

Fall is always a different vibe for the girls with some teams split along high school lines and others blended, as well as most coaches focusing more on development than winning at all costs, but not a lot of surprises here in the top 9.

Uncharacteristic underperformance for Oaks Christian (“Pride”) and JSerra (“Mission”).

While JSerra is kinda still on-the-map (and shows relatively good bench per JV performance), Oaks did not look like usual Oaks at all in V or JV. Were we missing players there? Did talent just return back to Santa Barbara?

On the other side, SoCaPat’s performed decently as united club and show a good bench (based on JV performance).

SoCaPat JV picked up a decent center from Newport

So you’re saying SoCal Patriot performed well with a 2-2 record, with wins over Tsunami and Seaside, but Mission and Pride underperformed with the same record while losing to good teams?

If you look back at last year, it was a similar situation with teams missing people on different weekends and results changing week to week. I don’t think too much stock can be taken from one weekend of games, but it was great to see how competitive the games were across the board.

I believe Shores was missing at least two or three starters for both days. Even so seemed to get back into gear on day two against Pride/OC on Sunday.

Keep in mind that Oaks graduated a lot of talent last year and not sure how deep they were to begin with. Also these early Futures weekends are mostly not a good gage of strength. Many girls miss for different reasons in the fall. College visits, or maybe they have not figured out which open club they will end up at in the spring yet. Girls Club season does not get serious until after CIF playoffs in February.

In 2026-2027 season more drain from SoCaPats to Mission.

Kate Bambury (NT 16u etc) switched from SoCaPats to Mission and it left only Natalie Arata (same NT 16u etc) as still just as great center on SoCaPats but with no outside shooters of Kate’s level left, it will be hard going for new SoCaPats.

Interestingly, Kate’s move to Mission did not make Mission bombastically better (players like her should typically make huge difference). Note a significant representative loss to Legacy (Orange Lutheran).

Santa Barbara played like 8 people and borrowed a goalie from Legacy 🙂 and still led with points to spare vs Regency (Mater Dei). (Wonder if that odd team mashup is reason SB vs Regency is marked 0-5 on the sheet, not the board score which was like 11-9 or something)

There is enough there to start stacking the teams:

Sept 12: Newport 10 SB 8

Sept 26 SB 12 Legacy 11

Sept 26 SB ~11 Regency ~9

Sept 26: Legacy 12 Mission 8

Sept 12 Regency 11 Mission 6

Sept 12 Mission 7 LB Viking: Wilson 9

Newport has entirely too many people on the bench. it feels like 20+ people there. They keep on unleashing wave after wave of fresh troops onto whoever comes their way. 🙂 May be Newport vs Santa Barbara year on club circuit. Wonder how Santa Barbara crew will spread out (guessing some are still Oaks) once CIF girls season starts in the south.

Until the high school season is over, Oaks always plays as Pride for Futures League. At the end of the HS season, many of the Oaks players will join SB. Oaks/Pride is currently playing in Division 2 of the the Fall Futures League.

This weekend Futures Womens games continue same exact earlier noted trends:

Mission (JSera) is consistently struggling. At this point it’s at best top 5 in So Cal. (They now 7th in tournament, but likely result of schedule more than real strength). The gap from other so cal powerhouses is very large this year.

Regency has nice fire in them. Managed to beat Newport (the only loss of entire tourney for Newport).. The word is Newport played uncharacteristically bad this game, like they came to play one game, but realized it’s another type of game, but refused to fix it and just slumbered through to a loss. What’s different about Regency vs Newport is depth of bench. Regency JV is bottom of B bracket, while Newport JV is 2nd of JV ranking.

Santa Barbara is definitely not the powerhouse they were in 2026 JOs. Too many players aging out is the going explanation. Performance is erratic: win vs Legacy, but loss 17-15 to Long Beach Wilson.

Newport + Regency (Mater Dei) sitting on top feels real, not imaginary. Both team are bringing majority of their real and deep teams.

Legacy is undergoing recalibration, they see why they are ending up 3rd / 4th in the tournament and are now leaning on outside shots, which works for now (even their JV team is taking it seriously and climbed from laggard to top of JV ranking).

1,2 ~ Regency / Newport

3,4 - Legacy / SB (which keeps on suffering erratically from long travel and not bringing enough players)

Then a huge gap…

</div>

I wouldn’t read too much into anything at Futures League right now, nobody is trying to win anything - it’s just prep for the HS season. Some teams are going deep into their roster, they’re trying new things, etc. JSerra will be just fine, Ethan Damato was in Brazil for 10 days for the 19U PanAm’s prior to this weekend. And the “fall” version of Santa Barbara does not include the Oaks girls who play for Pride in the fall. SB may not be as dominant as last summer’s team (it was a generational team) but they’ll be right there competing for a gold medal at the 18U JO’s in 2027 - Jamie and Cathy will have the girls ready when it matters (they won 16U JO’s too).

Santa Barbara will be just fine. They use these weekends to get everyone plenty of playing time as take pride in rolling with small cohesive rosters. As noted, they will add the Oaks girls and others in the spring and summer.

Also, has Jserra (Mission) ever competed with the top 4 teams? Seems like now they are as close as they ever have been. The club didn’t even have a team prior to last fall and their high school program had never made the open division. They seem to building with a young roster.

Legacy, Regency and Newport have done a great job establishing great teams that will be successfuil year in and year out. Should be a fun high school season.

One thing I noticed about water polo parente more than any other sport….

Excuses. Always “some reason” and always “doesn’t matter”. Until it does. And then it’s another set of excuses.

I think the over explaining done in threads tends to fall under Shakespearean doth protest too much and less analytical, good faith.

It is my opinion that it’s ok for teams to win and it’s ok for teams to lose and it doesn’t reflect poorly upon last years super squad or aging out or roster tweaking or coaches absent or any other narrative. It’s just….a loss. Or a win. We can give kudos to the victors of any game; any tourney, without it reflecting on the egos of the parents who don’t want others “to get the wrong idea”.

Everyone is quick to point out that so and so will “get them ready” in time. Look, every snapshot is a chance for teams to compete and when they pull off a win you didn’t expect, just tip your cap and don’t over-explain. The team you beat and play is the one in front of you. That one. Not the imaginary one. Everyone will be ok. _emphasized text_.

Just let them play their games and the girls that earned the W get the credit without all these overexplainers trying to marginalize. Nobody cares about last year. Nobody even remembers generational talent in our tiny niche sport. Those teams do and the few girls who pursue it beyond high school compete and then become regular boring adults like us, maybe even water polo exchange contributors one day!!!
