CT Premier/Y Pro Utility Sam Katz has elected to stay home and commit to LIU despite interest from other programs. Reunites with former teammates Mark Malamud and David Shalman.

I was a little surprised by the choice as he did have other division 1 interest, but good for him! I’ve seen Sam play a few times he’s a tall, strong, right-handed utility with a lot of upside. Great recruiting for LIU.

Looking at the data so far for the '26 Boys, it appears playing on a highly ranked club team is pretty important (or at least is an indicator). Columns are the 2025 JO Bracket, the rows are the final rankings of the college programs.

2025 Final Ranking N/A INTL AG AU PT Grand Total
1-5 1 16 17
6-10 1 1 2 13 17
11-15 3 10 13
16-20 1 2 28 31
21-25 1 1 1 8 11
26-30 1 1 8 10
31-35 4 2 6
36-40 1 1
46-50 1 1
New in '26 1 3 1 5
Grand Total 7 5 3 11 86 112

There is a bit of circular logic at play: elite players build elite teams, which in turn leads to recruitment by top colleges. The 2025 Youth National Team Selection Camp (NTSC) list illustrates this, featuring only one player from a team that didn’t finish Junior Olympics (JOs) in the Platinum division.

The mechanics of recruiting amplify this cycle. College coaches primarily scout the top 10–15 teams at JOs and often discount highlight reels filmed against lower-tier opponents. Since weaker teams consistently play against weaker competition, top-tier exposure is hard to come by. Consequently, it is no surprise that elite players gravitate toward powerhouse clubs, making the strong even stronger.

Christian Renzuto, Italy, St Mary’s

I wonder why they say he is their 5th signing and not their 7th including the 2 boys from CA.

I would guess it is because they are signed with athletic scholarship money.

Luke James Weichert (Sage Hill HS/Imperial WPC) decommitted from UC Irvine and is now headed to Princeton. Devastating loss for the Anteaters. Weichert has been very good in D1 Futures and had a terrific senior year.
