Chris Koo is also JO 15

Chris Koo is JO 16. Bad birthday.

Literally, the worst for JOs.

Yeah like the absolute worst date you can imagine

anyone know why the cut off date is the date it is for JOs? i have always thought it should be your age on the date of the tournament (i.e. if you are 14 on date of tournament but turn 15 on July 31, then you would still be eligible for 14U).

How old you are on 8/1 in the year of the tournament.

yes i know that…but was curious why aug 1 is the date versus calendar year or other date….the august 1 cutoff does seem to impact a fair amount of 8th graders who may not be big enough or skilled enough to keep up with 16u kids.

It’s one of the more frustrating rules involving USA Water Polo. My feeling is that if you’re 14 during JOs, you should be allowed to play 14u. You may choose not to play 14u, which is fine, but at least allow for a player and/or coach to make that decision.

I think any fixed date makes more sense than the starting date of the JOs that changes from year to year. As for those rising freshmen who turn 15 before August 1, yes it is tough luck, but quite a few of those were held back by parents, often for athletic reasons. They are the oldest in their grade and there are some benefits that come with this. On balance, they should be fine.

I think that’s why they came up with 8/1 date - JOs is over by then!

Separately, if you have a good JOs birthday it is likely a good ( just check the threads elsewhere here!) ODP birthday.

Hard disagree on that one. A good JO birthday is a bad ODP birthday. A good JO birthday is in late Q3 or early Q4 while a good ODP birthday is in Q1.

Sorry! That’s exactly what I meant!:winking_face_with_tongue:

But even a Q1 birthday isn’t well enough for ODP if you are an odd birth year - do I understand that view correctly? It’s been difficult for me to follow and understand the specific ramifications.

Totally fair points.

the date is August 1. If your birthday is August 1 or earlier, you are “age X” as of August 1 and you play in the Age X tournament. If your birthday is August 2 or later, you are not Age X on August 1 and therefore can play in the younger bracket.

An August 1, 2008 kid (who just played 18U at 16 years old) who’s a current junior will get a third crack at JOs for 18/19U in 2027.
