I will bid for ODP. I already cracked the economic model with ODP 7x7, ODP 4x4, and my extra secret sauce is ODP for 12U, which seems to be the most popular age group. It will be a prep course for ODP. Now when I put more thought on it, I might also add ODP for even and odd years and 1Q+2Q and 3Q+4Q. Infinite opportunities. ---

Open Gym Premier (basketball/volleyball) expanded from 1 site in Anaheim in 2020/2021 to 5 sites in SoCal, NorCal, and Texas and their signature app, player and game tracker and tournament circuit, Grassroots365 is state wide. They say they are above it but there is no way that happened without private investment. I would actually be interested what would happen if a PE group took over an Orange County polo club…this is such a culty, bro driven, old boys network sport that an actual adult, well funded, businessman/person who could give 2 shits about how many CIF titles, JO, or international medals people have won might flip the sport on its head. ---

And this system has to include automatic reclassification for graduating year. Optional upgrade to change birth year (very pricey). ---

Buy two water polo clubs and every couple years the staff from one club leaves for the other. The coaches would take kids with them creating a closed loop club hopping system. ---

Interesting thought experiment on how important winning is to generating cash flow. The top players aren’t the ones that generates the profits, it’s the bench and B teams paying for development. Would PE owners risk alienating paying parents by importing players for JOs. Younger ages are also profitable due to the more frequent tournaments. ---

In tennis, it’s called “the chum” (B teams/developing players subsidize the rest) and private equity definitely knows how to run business (the profit side) better than any of the good ol boys of water polo. There are so many inefficiencies and ways to squeeze more revenue while reducing overhead. It’s ruthless and can be corrected. Even the big clubs struggle mightily because they aren’t elite at how to operate. They are elite at ball. ---

If you want to control the verticals, then you have to have your own pool. Proper management there is critical. PE is certainly rolling up small pools for swim lessons which is where the money is. Water polo alone is a great way to make a small fortune if you’re starting with a large one. ---

Key metric is pool density ie fee payers per pool Swim easily handles 6 per lane x 6 lanes in a tight SCY 25y, that’s 36 participants at one time, all active. Best case is 8 per lane x 8 lanes, 64 participants. Polo has 14 actively scrimmaging participants in the same space, with at most 18 on the wall (and very disgruntled parents). So 32 participants. Swimming economics dwarf polo economics. Unless you can partner with a swim team and get excess capacity (many clubs do obv) or have anti-competitive contracts on pools where HS polo coaches get cheap guaranteed time (almost all do), polo gets outbid by swim every time. Sorry but PE won’t find much interesting in polo. ---

Branding is critical here - once the deal is done, change the name of the club. Something European should work. ---
