Newport Harbor will be up north a day early also. They play St. Francis on Thursday. St. Francis isn’t in the North-South Challenge, but they begin play today in the Memorial Cup.

Here are my predictions for this weekend’s Memorial Cup. I think any of the schools I have listed 1 through 4 could win the tournament and any of the schools I have listed 5 through 8 could finish fifth.

1. Corona del Mar. Balanced scoring is a key for CdM.
2. Wilson. I believe Wilson will be at full strength for the first time in several weeks.
3. Campolindo. Goaltending and defense are the keys for Campolindo.
4. Dos Pueblos. The potential semifinal game between Dos Pueblos and Long Beach Wilson should be a good one.
5. De La Salle. De La Salle will have to play better than they did at last weekend’s Bishop’s Invitational to finish fifth.
6. Soquel. Soquel has the best high school goalie in the country. The potential third-round game between Soquel and San Ramon Valley could go either way.
7. San Ramon Valley. San Ramon Valley has had more than its share of injuries this year. They could finish as high as fifth if they are at full strength.
8. Buchanan. Buchanan could also finish as high as fifth.

With Campolindo and Soquel in the final match of the Memorial Cup, this is the first “All Northern California” tournament final since 2007 when Miramonte defeated Sacred Heart Prep, 9-7.

The CDM Wilson game was one of the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen. This whole weekend the memorial cup refs have been horrific

Congratulations to Campolindo for winning the Memorial Cup tourney. I have records on the tournament going back to 1992. This is Campo’s first championship, having finished second in 2018 and 2017. Soquel had never previously won the tournament either, with just one second place finish – back in 2002. So, really nice effort by both teams.

How so? Can you explain more than just the generic “refs sucked” kinda thing for those of us who weren’t there? Any game clips you can share that illustrate what you’re saying? Thanks!

The Steve Pal Memorial Tournament wrapped up this afternoon in Los Alamitos. The top division is the Kimbell Division. In the championship rounds, the results were: Semi-finals: Buena 16, Yucaipa 13; Beckman 13, Riverside Poly 11. Third Place: Riverside Poly 13, Yucaipa 12. Finals: Beckman 13, Buena 10.

In the latest weekly “Unofficial Rankings” here on Water Polo Exchange, Beckman was ranked 21, Buena 22, Yucaipa 25 and Riverside Poly unranked.

The tournament got a little muddy to judge the results. The “right” side of the bracket that fed into the day two medals saw a couple of meaningful forfeits due to the fires. May have ended up the same result but who knows. For example I believe Buena and Poly both only played/won one game to roll into the semi finals vs having to play/win two. San Clemente and Santana were both affected which probably wouldn’t have been push over games for either.

Torrey Pines went 4-0 to win the Arroyo division with victories over Redlands (20-8), Servite (14-11), Clovis East (11-9) and Dana Hills (12-7). Fortunate timing got the team through Pendleton and past LJC before the 5 closed northbound.

We heard several athletes’ families were under evacuation orders. Hopefully the CIF official position is that the missed games are “force majeure” no-contest as opposed to forfeit.
