What are the reasons clubs don’t want to go to Champions Cup?

uh… it is in Indiana for starters. During the school year.

I have been with a club that has gone and are contemplating going again. The Pro’s:

  1. End of the Intermediate/Middle School season, we use it as a end of year school tournament.
  2. You have 6 quality games, instead of 4 okay games for less amount than Kap7
  3. Gets the boys and girls who are not in Club polo to step in and see the difference between school and club. Literal thrown into the deep end “First game is against SoCal” type of experience.
  4. Great bonding for going into HS. Last year in Chicago was a blast. Two games each day allowing the kids to explore downtown Chicago, take in the museums and sightsee outside of California as a 8th grader was awesome.

The con’s:

  1. As mentioned in a previous post, the cost. To move a coach with Flight, hotel, car, per diem and game reimbursement, it pencils out to about $4,250
  2. Full buy in from parents. Because we do not travel as a team, a parent has to attend with the child. Flight for two, hotel, auto and food for 4 days (we leave Thursday afternoon and come back either Sunday or Monday) is substantial.
  3. Parents who are already in club, do not see the benefit in traveling to the midwest to get blown out of the water. Parents who are not in club, listen and take advice from friends who are already in club, making it hard for the messaging to get across.

This year, we are going to make the pitch to our parents to send two teams, boys and girls with a mixture of 7th and 8th grade. Minimum # of athletes is 11 to keep the costs down.

Do we know if Hawaii is sending a team this year? Could affect how many second-place teams from larger CA zones get a bid.

Not a high level tournament, but in the San Diego Pacific Fall Classic this weekend, 14u Division, Del Mar tied Shores and La Jolla United beat both, Del Mar and Shores. Shores is currently playing with a goalie and their best field player, both are in 8th grade but not 14u eligible.

With SD Shores and Shore-SCAR both running 14u super-senior lineups to close out 2025, I wonder if that is going to become the new normal or if this is just a weird year.

I believe it happens in the fall, at least in San Diego. It’s not often that a 15u is still in 8th grade. The fall tournaments seem to allow for it, but most fall tournaments go under the radar. The Champions Cup is that one unique, higher profile tournament. The Shore SCAR team seems to be unique, having a handful of clubs playing together with a handful of 15u athletes.

It wasn’t often in the past that a 15U was 8th grade - but it’s quickly becoming standard. Redshirting, gap years, HS freshman driving and turning 20 in freshman year of college. Sigh

Evan Cousineau preliminary seeding is out. 15u are permitted to play in this tournament. We should get a decent sense of some early standings, with the 15u caveat as well as the flip side… teams missing August-birthday 14u kids who are current freshmen in high school.

Norcal beat 680 17- 8.

Didn’t someone say there were 9 teams vying for a spot? Anyone have more scores than just NorCal/680?

Thank you! Seeding seems to have hurt Lamo.

Pac girls sheet: Pacific Zone 8th Grade & Under Girls Champions Cup Qualification Tournament - Google Sheets

1st: Diablo
2nd: Stanford
3rd: Lamo
4th: Santa Cruz

Lamo and diablo were in the same bracket which was rather odd.

Man, seeding appears to have deprived Lamo of a rightful second spot (and a likely bid to Champions Cup) for both the boys and girls.

Have all of the Champion’s Cup spots been determined?
